Wing Commander's Creator Is Getting Back Into Video Games

Chris Roberts is one of my gaming heroes. I grew up on games like Wing Commander, Strike Commander and Pacific Strike, hooked on Roberts' insistence that PC games could make story and dialogue as important as visuals and mechanics.

Sadly, he's been away from video games for around a decade now, pursuing a career in the film industry where he ended up producing flicks like 2004's Punisher, Lord of War and sci-fi dragon movie Outlander.

But wait, what's this? A return? A website turned up yesterday with the following statement attached:

If you've made it here, you probably know who I am. Maybe you have heard of Wing Commander and its sequels, or perhaps Strike Commander, Privateer or Freelancer.

If not, you're still welcome!

I grew up making video games. I sold my first game at the age of 13 and created Wing Commander when I was 21. But 10 years ago, at the height of my career I took a break. Not because I stopped loving or playing games but because I had become frustrated with the limits of the technology at the time to realise my vision.

I decided to pursue my desire to create detailed worlds and tell sophisticated stories in film.

I always said the moment I became interested in making games again was when I was going to come back.

With the power of today's computers and the reach of the internet I finally feel I have the tools to build the connected experience that I always dreamed of. A world that would be more satisfying and richer than any film I could work on.

With films you tell stories but with games you create worlds.

If you've played my games, you'll know that's what I love to do.

I'm here to tell you that I have been working on something for just under a year, something that embraces everything that my past games stood for but takes it to the next level.

I hope you'll be as excited by it as I am.

My new endeavour is still in its early stages but I invite you to take the journey with me.

If you register below you'll become an insider that will not only give you early access to the game's website and forums, but you will also get the opportunity for rewards and privileges that no one else will get. It's my way of showing how important your early involvement and support is.

The full announcement will be at 10am Eastern Standard Time (UTC -5) on the 10th day of the 10th month of this year.

My name is Chris Roberts.

And if you would indulge me I would like to create a world for you.

In short, on October 10, we'll see a new space game from the guy who created Wing Commander. If that doesn't get you excited, you're beyond saving.

The image above is one of the first pieces of artwork released for the project.

If he stands up on October 10 and announces he's making a mobile and/or Facebook game then I think I'll cry.

If it's the open space combat/trading game that Freelancer couldawouldashouldabeen, I will do a dance of joy.

      This comment.

Wing commander is one of the reasons I got into games in the first place. That being said Chris Roberts has been out of the game (no pun intended) so long, that i think he'll take a title or two to catch up. I'd love to be proven wrong, because he is a great storyteller.

With a great dev team behind him I think he'll bring some great storytelling back to the game world. I long for a great space trading game along the lines of Privateer or Freelancer. I'd LOVE a remake of WC1 2 3 and 4 (not 5...)

    This just made my day!

Heres hoping for an open world space trading and combat game ala freelancer (which I'm not ashamed to say I loved) with the ability to land and walk around the stations/cities ala 3rd person games (either RPG style or GTA style, I'm not sure which I'd prefer.

Oh, and the ability to buy and fly capital sized ships.

This is now my most highly anticipated game!

Played EVE lately my good man?

Not since they added the walk around feature. I tried REALLY hard on multiple occasions to like EVE but I just can't enjoy it.

I need a story line to keep me interested.

The last couple of lines are almost a direct lift from that Prometheus promo with Guy Pearce being Weyland: "My name is Peter Weyland. And if you'll indulge me, I'd like to change the world..."

    this guy owns my childhood

Wing Commander 2 was the first game I ever played. It was my favourite series of all time, for a long time.

But I've gotta say, with the benefit of hind sight, it wasn't all roses. But I'd be VERY happy to get a joystick using space sim again. I would give it EVERY chance. It's been too long since Freespace 2.

Exciting stuff. I love a game with a compelling universe.

Can it really be? That image just brings images of New Detroit flooding back (without the incessant rain though). Here's hoping for an open-world space sim to show the others how it is done.

Wing Commander was one of my favourite series as a teenager.
Can't wait to see what he has in store for us.
