Castles And Greater Customisation Among The First Details To Emerge On Dragon Age III

Character customisation will return "in a big way" for Dragon Age III according to a BioWare panel spilling details and concept art on next year's game at the at the Edmonton Comic & Entertainment Expo today.

Already known as Dragon Age III: Inquisition and slated for a "late fall 2013" release, BioWare said it would release concept art being shown at the expo later today. Cinematic designer Jon Perry said that "one level in Dragon Age 3 is as big as all of the levels in Dragon Age 2."

Creative director Mike Laidlaw said that "customization is going to be bigger than Dragon Age Origins," to include "follower customisation," according to producer Cameron Lee's live-tweeting of the event.

Asked how much control players would have over their character, lead writer David Gaider said "You will be human," before adding that "backgrounds will be in Dragon Age 3 even though you will be human, it's not playable but it does significant impact on the story." That again was according to Lee's twitter feed.

Other details trickling out suggest that you'll be able to take control of your own castle, and that the game will import prior character choices but, said executive producer Mark Darrah, "we're investigating some ways without save imports."

For more on this, I'd suggest following Lee on Twitter.

    That's a fan-made logo, btw...

Bioware plan to have the panel recordings up later today as well.

Sounds amazing so far and the backgrounds thing is cool, though it sounds more like Mass Effect's implementation of the origin idea. (Which was pretty great, especially in the first game. Would've liked it to impact the game more along the way too.)

Im ok with you being human but DAO should have some impact on 3, god knows it had SFA impact on 2...

Kotor 3 or you can kiss my ass!

Is this out yet? I want it to be out right now!

Wow forced to be a boring human again in a fantasy game....yeah they can stick it from where they think the sun shines.

      From the sky?

not according to Bioware, they think the sun literally comes out of their ass. Just look at all their public statements recently.

    haters gunna hate!

I'm a big fan of the series, and while I found DA2 ridiculously dumbed down, I still enjoyed it. I'm really looking forward to DA3. #biowarefanboi

I'm taking anything Bioware says with a grain of salt from now on after the disappointment of DA2 and ME3...

Does this mean you aren't continuing the story of Hawke from DA2? Because there was a lot of foreshadowing from DA2 implying that Hawke's impact on the world was not going to be confined to what happened in DA2.

They had planned to continue Hawke's story in an expansion to DA2, but it was cancelled.

Mike Laidlaw did suggest that Hawke would turn up in some way in DA3, though. Hawke and the Warden were foreshadowed as being important people in the end of the second game, like you said.

This doesn't sound all that promising to me. In fact, I it sounds a lot like they're making the same mistakes that made DA2 crap.

Why are people still listening to Bioware after DA2, ME3 and SWTOR? They are worse than Molyneux.

So the two best parts of DA:O, playable races and playable origin stories, won't be past of DA3. Colour me disappointed. I'll still get the game, but those are the only two things I really wanted in it.

According to the developers it's really difficult to justify the cost of playable races when they'd need new voice actors (and two for each one, to cover the genders) *and* new cinematics to take into account the height differences between elves/dwarves/humans. It worked in Origins because the player character was silent and conversations were two nodding heads, but DA2/DA3 use actual cinematics and the cost of other races looks way too high.

(The player character is already the most expensive voice actor because they have the most lines by far in the game, and adding playable races would triple that cost at a minimum)

I don't see why they'd need new voice actors though. It worked fine in TOR having the same voice actors for all the races based on class. I sort of get the camera thing, but again you have to look at TOR. The different body sizes meant you basically had 4 different races but they still managed to position the camera properly for all of them.

exactly. They're being lazy and they know it.

This sounds really good, I hope they manage to add some NPCs in the game who wont give us a quest without handing over our credit card as well!

Well bioware are the current lords of making things sound good.

Lol for the love of god Do not fucking repeat locations for 6 different fucking quests !

“one level in Dragon Age 3 is as big as all of the levels in Dragon Age 2.”

This means absolutely nothing. DA2 was horrendous with it's repeated maps, he's basically saying "it's better than crap", ANYTHING is better than crap, dirt is better than crap, even trash is generally better than crap .

I can't wait til Dragon Age 5 where we get to combine all our level capped main characters in the previous games and go on an insane high level adventure to save the entire world.

    You know it makes sense.
