Easily Score A Couple Of Super-Rare Items In Borderlands 2

I've got a golden ticket! I've got a golden chance to make my way! When Charlie Bucket opened up that golden ticket, he probably wasn't thinking that Willy Wonka was going to give him a sweet sniper rifle or a shield that generates ammo. And yet, in Borderlands 2, a similar golden key can give you those very things.

I'm late to the party on the whole golden key thing. I got a press copy of the game, which is the same as a pre-ordered copy, and so it came with a golden key. Immediately upon arriving in Sanctuary, I found a big weapon container.

"Yay," I thought. "A weapon container!"

I did what you usually do with weapon containers in this game: I opened it. Inside were two beautiful sniper rifles, far more glorious than anything I had picked up in the first few levels of the game. I used one of those sniper rifles for the next six or eight hours of the game, until I finally found something better.

I didn't know at the time that I had used my one and only golden key, which allows me to open that single loot chest and get two super-rare pieces of gear. I figured it out much later and felt a little disappointed. I wanted another golden key!

Fortunately, there's a really easy way to get one. (Well, there is also a hack that lets you generate infinite keys, but I haven't tried that, as well as an Xbox glitch, but I don't want to go THAT far, and I'd imagine that stuff will be patched out of the game eventually, anyway.) My way involves no trickery or profile.bin finagling.

It's simple — so simple, that I'm sure you hardcore Borderlands 2 players have already done it. But if you haven't, I thought I'd let you know: All you have to do is sign up for Gearbox's free "Shift" service and you'll get a free golden key. You can even just delete your account immediately afterwards, if you don't like having that kind of extraneous gaming account (I sure don't.)

Here's how: First, go to Gearbox's "Shift" online service and sign up. You'll get a confirmation email, so go ahead and confirm.

Then go into your Borderlands 2 game and find the "Shift Code" option. You won't have to enter a Shift code — you'll just have to enter the login info you just made.

You'll be prompted to enter a code, but you already have your free golden key. When you boot up the game, you should see this dialogue box:

Hooray! You can now go get a sweet piece of kit anytime you want.

If you don't want to keep your shift account, it's very easy to delete:

And there you have it. I got a super powerful shield that sometimes will absorb bullets and add to my ammo count. Sweet!

Does deleting then remaking the account give key number two?

Except of course that there hasn't been a code up on twitter since the 6th October and they only worked for about 30 mins. I've been trying to get extra keys and I haven't found any other ways except the old twitter codes that I missed out on and this way. Granted I did know about shift earlier, but others may not.

The first few codes Randy put up were for multiple keys and only good for about 1,000 redemptions, which was them kinda "beta testing" the system. Those codes vanished in about 5 minutes. They gradually changed this to 1 key per code.

The codes Gearbox was putting up last weekend were up for 3 hours (not 30 minutes) and they put up 3 codes a day for a stretch of 4 or 5 days. I'm guessing they'll put codes up again this weekend and probably more regularly after that - I recommend following them on Twitter and having Twitter ping you whenever @GearboxSoftware tweets, then drop everything and put the code in.

+1. You can even get codes from Twitter! Wow! Social Media integration! The Future... NOW!

If you follow the Twitter accounts on the menu screen, they regularly post Shift codes for extra Golden Keys.

The items you get are tied to your level, so it's best to wait until you're maxed out at level 50 before popping that chest.

While mostly true it's worth occasionally popping a box open at lower levels, if you can spare the keys. I have about 8 at the moment (ignore the hyperbole in my earlier post) but I'm only level 43 and I've probably used about 10 keys. A lot of the items you get aren't that great or useful compared to what you have anyway so I can understand the mentality behind hoarding keys then opening it five times in a row in hopes of nabbing something totally epic, but considering you max out at level 50 and will probably do multiple playthroughs, it's worth considering having some good lower level items too.

Of course running around with a level 15 Corrosive Teapot and a Level 11 Shield of the Firehawk until you're level 20 is fun too. :P

I maxed out pretty easily (thanks Fleshstick!) so it wasn't hard to hold out a while longer to use my four keys. Damned shift codes always expire before I get a chance to use them.

My wife has been obsessively monitoring Gearbox and snags every code she can, like she has a personal vendetta against them for tricking her into wasting her key because the box in Sanctuary doesn't look special until after the first time you use it.

Yep, it's so easy to accidentally use up a golden key without realising. I did it TWICE and still didn't know until a friend told me about it. I somehow had 3 Golden Keys (1 from premiere, 1 from SHiFT) before they started Tweeting them, still have no idea where the last one came from :P.

Sure I was kind of annoyed back then but keys are so easy to get now through tweets and by the 'end game' it's so easy to farm level 50 gear off Terra or the last boss. The Bee shield is so OP :P

Although I don't really need them I still get sad when I see codes being tweeted but I'm at somewhere where I can't redeem them or they've already expired :'(

Where are you guys finding all those keys? I've only seen a couple posted on the Gearbox twitter, where else?

The first time I saw them were from Randy and he tweeted maybe 6 or so over the weekend 2 or so weeks back.

              @DuvalMagic I believe

Good thing that guy who farms level 50 bosses had some pretty cool gear for you!

I suspect that it's the people who are dicking around trying to glitch in extra golden keys that are the ones losing their badass ranks.

Incorrect, i've lost my baddas rank twice now, and i only ever had 3 keys, unused.

Ah well, I stand corrected. Dick away.

lol. they seem to think its to do with the way profiles are saved, apparenlty there is a global profile and then a character specific save profile. and sometime the global one gets overwritten with a blank slate... not sure how or why yet, but seems to be across all platforms.

I also have a mate that just gives himself unlimited keys and he still has all his baddas points/ranks.

Up next on Kotaku - did you know Duke Nukem Forever came out?!?

Oh.. I was under the impression that it was a golden key PER character, so each character you started had a chance to get a decent weapon for "free".. wonder why they made it one per game purchase like that.. seems a bit odd...

Thanks for the tip to get a replacement.. but still.. only 2 keys?? Guess I'll be hacking my .bin file sooner or later..

Why would it be per character when you can share weapons/items between characters....

theres nothing stopping you from giving the gun to a new character when u start it. lots of people on the forums are using a key every 10 levels so that they have lots of high quality weapons spread across all characters.

Oh right.. that is true.. there's that locker thing you get..

This is fantastic! Did not know, but thats awesome :D

I kept forgetting about this... Might as well get it over with while I remember...

i don't see the point in doing this, my level 50 assassin has stuff way better than anything that comes out of those boxes. just get an orange alkaline the bee from the radio guy and it makes every gun better

So use the keys before you hit level 50 then... Use one whenever you've had a run of bad luck without picking up anything decent for a while. Oh and word is The bee is getting a massive nerf at the next patch.

Why would you delete your shift account?
Only 1 free golden key is enough for you?
Seems redundant to even mention that tbh. Why not mention that you can keep getting free golden keys if you KEEP your shift account and use the codes that are put up on the gearbox software twitter.
