Harvey Smith Has Mixed Feelings About Whether There Should Be A Dishonored 2

Have you played Dishonored yet? The folks who made it wrote out a great deal of lore to flesh out the game's steampunky, alt-fiction, whale-filled world. So it stands to reason that they might want to make a sequel.

But designer Harvey Smith isn't sure. Speaking to me in an interview last week, Smith said he kinda wants Dishonored to be a one-shot deal.

"Part of me would love to see future games leverage this world," he said, "and part of me would love it if the vault door was just closed and that's it. This is your one view into the Empire of the Isles and into the city of Dunwall."

"Are you leaning one way or the other?" I asked.

In response, Harvey just laughed. "I can't say!"

Please. Just enjoy the game you have. Just because its good doesn't mean it "needs" a sequel. I think the gaming industry would be far more healthy if there were less of them.

Sequels are an awesome way to continue enjoying a game world, refining all the things that worked and cutting all the things that didn't. Here's some awesome sequels that I'm glad exist:

    Assassins Creed 2
    Mass Effect 2
    Half Life 2
    Borderlands 2
    Just Cause 2
    Saints Row 2
    Torchlight 2
    The Witcher 2
    Portal 2
    Left 4 Dead 2
    Team Fortress 2
    Trine 2
    Batman Arkham City
    Doom 2

Those are just from the top of my head, I'm sure there's heaps more. Yeah sequelitis can be a problem, but I'll take the bad with the good.

As far as Dishonoured goes, I just played through the first hour of the game and I'm already smitten, the art style and complete realisation of this world has enchanted me and I hope to see more of it in the future.

I actually thought 5 of those sequels were inferior to their predecessors. see if you can guess which!!
regardless, no one is arguing sequels should never happen, just that not every game that does well HAS to have a sequel. for every good sequel there's multiple horrible ones.

        Doom 2
        Mass Effect 2
        Left 4 Dead 2
        Portal 2
        Batman Arkham City
        ?

I actually had Portal 2, Doom 2, and Left 4 Dead 2 in a separate list of "games which are awesome in their own right, but not necessarily 'better' than the originals"... but then I thought I'd just collapse it as I like all those sequels at least as much as the first games.

edit: Are there really lots of horribad sequels? I'm sure there are heaps which don't expand or improve on the first, but if I loved the first, I'm usually up for more of the same at the very least.

Not great sequels I can think of off the top of my head :
        Force Unleashed 2 (terrible)
Bioshock 2 (I didn't mind it, but it was just more of the same).
Prince of Persia: Warrior Within (Sands was just so amazing at the time).

...and Duke Nukem, but that's a whole different world of bad.

        edit 2: I liked Crysis 2 and FEAR 2... :)

Batman Arkham City (it was just an overblown version of the much more atmospheric first, now with a ridiculous comic book storyline)

Portal 2 (the portal concept was amazing the first time)

        Mass Effect 2?
        Saints Row 2?
        Doom 2?

A sequel would be a fantastic way to re-experience the world and setting, but also provide a more engaging story. It kind of depends what you want the sequel to be and whether you want it to be powered by the brand name or the world itself. There could be any other number of stories to tell in that universe and have nothing to do with what happened in Dishonored. There are ice and jungle themes continents that a potential sequel could take place in. Or, it could simply be set in Dunwall with more emphasis on character interaction. Instead of sneaking through the shadows to assassinate people you could instead talk to people and solve mysteries, like Sherlock Holmes.

whats wrong with aiming to have that all the fist time round though eh?

Realistic scope and ambition, hindsight, artistic/narrative focus etc

Well of course not every game MUST have a sequel but to say you just shouldn't have one because there are too many is just as ignorant as deciding to do one for the sake of it. Frankly, I'm just pleased they're thinking about it. Actually questioning whether one is necessary. Whether there is or isn't one doesn't really matter, as long as they actually thought about it enough to come to a real decision.

C'mon Harvey, you can't give us a taste of such a brilliantly conceived and realized world and not offer more! Dishonored is one of the most brilliant games I have played in my 20+ years of gaming, and it would be a great disservice to such a wonderful IP to not give us a sequel (or more!)

Since Corvo's story seemed pretty much closed at the end of the game, perhaps with a new protagonist, to show another facet of Dunwall?

It seems silly to me when people spend years coming up with an entire, living world and then lock it away after the first run. You don't need to make a sequel, just create new games set in the same universe.
