Nintendo Is Looking For Australia's Fastest Mario Kart Racers

This morning I arrive to the above massive trophy, sent directly from Nintendo HQ. A genuinely incredible replica of the Leaf Cup from Mario Kart 7. This thing is outrageously heavy, so I'm assuming that means it wasn't cheap. Why did Nintendo send us such a thing? Well, apparently it's looking for Australia's top Mario Karter to take part in a massive community event in Sydney. So who wants to represent Kotaku?

There are a couple of caveats — to begin with, you have to be great at Mario Kart, and I'm taking your word for it here. Secondly, you have to be over 18, and thirdly, you have to be able to make your own way to Sydney between 6.30pm and 10.30 on November 1 for the event.

It sounds like it's going to be a pretty awesome event with top notch prizes for those who compete. The event kicks off with qualifying rounds at the venue and the cool thing, for me at least, is the fact that you don't have to play the latest version of the game to get through to the finals. There are qualifying round for Super Mario Kart on the SNES, Mario Kart 64 on the N64, Mario Kart Double Dash for the GCN and Mario Kart Wii. The grand finals are contested with Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS, but still — even if you specialised in one of the older games, you still have a chance to get through to the finals. Pretty swish.

And the prizes aren't too shabby either. The top three racers will receive 3DS XLs signed by Charles Martinet himself.

If you'd like to head to the event, drop a comment below telling us why you should be chosen. It's that simple! Anything goes — just keep it clean! Just make sure you're...

— Over 18 — Able to actually make it — At least passable at Mario Kart!

Alright. Let's-a-go!

there are four of us interested in this epic battle of the karts and i am the brains behind the operation (i found and frequent kotaku au daily) we are all over 18 and have been racing ever since our thumbs did what we wanted. my comrades are excellent at 64 version, while i am a jack of all games playing the entire collection and kicking ass. we are keen please grant us this honor (or at least me! )

I'd absolutely love to! I'll crush the competition like I crush the prerequisites. I've never won a fancy trophy, but I've won smaller, local competitions and had a blast playing with others at conventions.

I've found Mario Kart to be a pretty average game at times - especially playing single-player- but what makes it over-the-top great is playing with others. My Wii is filled with friends I made through Mario Kart. If I get chosen, I'll try my absolute best to win, but I'll definitely have fun!

Shouldn't be Nintendos' "Fastest WiiU console reseller?" :P

I think I missed this; I was too busy playing Mario Kart.
Well then, back to playing Mario Kart.

I don't see a single person from the (unofficial) MKWii/MK7 forums who submitted an application for any team; nobody knew about this promotion.
If Nintendo is going to make an Australian MK competition, they should at least publicise it a bit more.
I mean - damn it. Just make a thread on the forums, and you'll get at least six 18+ Sydney players (including myself) who've played every MK game, and can smash everyone. If they're looking for Australias "Fastest Mario Kart Racers" then there's no better place to find them.

I really think Nintendo's dropped the ball here.

I'm a former champion of the NSMB / MKDS tournament can post pic if needed :D, have held mario kart world records across different systems and am still great at the ones I haven't held world records for.

    Cheers.
