Dark Souls Secret Revealed: Director Was Pulling A Prank On Players

Dark Souls was notoriously one of the most challenging games of 2011. It killed players over and over, sometimes rewarding patience and determination in the face of death and failure with yet more death and failure.

And if players felt like the game was trolling them? Well, they may have been right. At least, about one certain thing.

In an interview with IGN, game director Hidetaka Miyazaki explained outright what the deal with the pendant is. And the answer is: he was having fun on the audience.

The pendant is an optional starting gift when a player begins Dark Souls. It doesn't actually do anything, but Miyazaki said in an interview once that if he were playing, he'd choose the pendant or nothing at all. Players, naturally, then drove themselves and each other a bit crazy trying to suss out any hidden properties, and to follow the reasoning.

But the actual reasoning? As Miyazaki told IGN: "When it comes to the pendant, I actually had a little bit of an intention to play a prank."

Perhaps getting to hear the anguished cries of players worldwide isn't such a farfetched motive for the man who made the game that had what felt like the entirety of Twitter yelling unanimous obscenities for month.

Funny thing is this confession won't stop speculation on the matter they will still debate/theory craft it. lol

Typical Japanese thinking....let's torture our fans. Takeshi's Castle comes to mind here.

    Hahaaaaa, good one

i think he is an assh0le. i picked the pendant and now my NG+++ character has to deal with all the bulls**t running all over the place rather than having the master key which would have made things a bit more pleasant. but i'll give him credit because the dlc kicked ass.

Can't you buy the master key now though?

You can indeed. The merchant from The Depths moves under the bridge near Firelink Shrine after you ring the second bell. He'll sell you the master key if you don't already have it.

yeah, i may be wrong but im pretty sure it's one of those items you lose at the end of each playthrough and have to buy again, and after the 2nd bell the master key is kind of useless. anyway i guess i'm still glad i have the pendant.

hmm it seems that i was wrong. i can't believe i never bought the master key off that guy

Yeah you can, Domhall of Zena sells for it 5000 souls after you beat Quelaag.

The pendant is an allegory moreso then a prank. Think about it Manus was obsessed by the pendant much like fans are obsessed by discovering the mystery of the pendant. Manus's soul description also states he was human once like us. There is also alot more speculation over the pendant then simply a 'prank'. Miyazaki is crafty and I wouldn't be so quick to believe everything he says.

(Thankyou popyea for the correction amended my comment now.)

Manus means hand actually. But the comparison is still one to think about.
