Entertainment Weekly Picks The 10 Best Games Of The Decade

Why wait for a year ending in nine or zero or one to pick the best games of the past decade? Entertainment Weekly is picking the best games of the decade this year, 2012. It’s not that they wager the world is ending and that we’re wrapping up the final decade ever. It’s that Spike TV’s Video Game Awards show is running its 10th annual show this year and they want people to decide what was the best game to come out in the VGA era.

EW has made the first move and picked 10 games.

The public — that’s you! — can now vote on the best of the bunch. (The public can also wonder why there’s no Grand Theft Auto, Angry Birds, Halo or Wario Ware: Twisted. Anyone with me on that last one?)

The choices:

  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
  • Half-Life 2
  • World of Warcraft
  • Shadow of the Colossus
  • Wii Sports
  • BioShock
  • Portal
  • Mass Effect 2
  • Red Dead Redemption
  • Batman: Arkham City

Go vote at EW.

Note: Kotaku is one of the outlets on the VGA advisory board, meaning we vote on nominees for awards given at the show (but not for this Game of the Decade thing). The VGAs will air on Spike on December 7 at 9pm ET/6pm CT. We’ll be attending and covering both the awards and the numerous trailers/exclusives expected to be revealed that night.

      • Wii sports sold consoles? Are you on drugs?
If Wii sports wasn’t bundled with the console it would have ben the worst selling game on the platform.

  • Red Dead Redemption hands down. Its prob one of the only ones were i felt awesome about coming home to my wife and kids and that song was amazing!

  • I hate when a mainstream publication tries to assemble a list of the “best” games, especially across a pretty broad period, but this is a decent effort. I might not agree with or like every game on the list (and I think Wii Sports is a bit of a stretch) they they’ve got a good handful of perfectly solid entries, games which are all to some degree influential or important.

    • Agreed. Asylum was a much tighter experience. That being said, major bonus points goes to A.C and Rocksteady for having the balls to kill off the Joker, and various other characters

      • Although it felt a little unwieldy, the story was great… Joab Gilroy on GameArena did a good piece on why the story was so good.

  • Out of that list my personal fave was Mass Effect 2, but half life 2 was definitely up there as well. Loved Batman but it’s hardly game of the decade.

Skyrim was an unlucky miss I think.

  • Lol @ wii sports and bioshock really…

Mass effect 2 and red dead were F***ing good.
Some missing though… SSF4 for one… also wtf no TF2… surely TF2 should get a mention.
The thing is that there are no nominations for ps2? like what about Metal Gear Solid 3.
But for me the No1 game for the past ten years is Sword of the Samurai \ Kengo2 on ps2,
but thats why its all relative.

maybe even blood will tell on ps2

  • What about Dark Souls and Demon’s Souls? Easily two of the best games ever created. Any list like these without them is a complete joke. I mean Wii Sports??? Seriously? Some Souls fans including myself consider the games to be even better than Ocarina of Time or Majoras Mask.

Its also missing Ico, Fallout 3, San Andreas and countless other legendary titles that far surpass garbage like Wii sports and Mass Effect. Mainstream publications are always laughable to say the least. Oh and Resident Evil 4. What a bunch of clowns.

  • Based on the impact they had on the gaming landscape, I’d have to say World of Warcraft, then Half-Life 2, and Wii Sports in third.

But for games I actually enjoyed the most, I’d say Half-Life 2, Portal, and Wind Waker. So it looks like HL2 gets my vote.

  • Deus Ex should be in the top ten imo. I’m not convinced that its the best game of the decade but the atmosphere and vibe it gave was just brilliant. In a league of its own. Skyrim, although good fails at being original and the subway system in fallout 3 was just a total pain in the arse. I would have expected to see a COD game in the list even though I loath the franchise.

  • No MGS games D:
but i’m quite happy Shadow of the Colossus made it
Well deserved game of the decade.
    unique in every aspect
best gaming hours of my life
