Former Square Honcho Calls Square Enix A 'Complete Failure' With 'No Vision'

With Square Enix posting losses in its latest earnings, former Square Co. boss Hisashi Suzuki thought this would be good a time as any to kick the company while it is down.

Via Twitter, Suzuki didn't hold back, claiming that the total value of publicly traded stock is not higher than it was before Square joined with Enix. According to Suzuki, "The merger was a complete failure. There's no vision for the future." He ended his tweet by pointing to Square Enix's recent losses, adding that development costs were heavy.

Suzuki was the president of Square from 2000 to 2002, before the company merged with Enix to form Square Enix. He was a Director at Square Enix from 2003 to 2005, and he is currently a Director at Sega, a former Rakuten senior exec, and a blunt Twitter user.

I believe it..... They really have lost their way...

Who doesn't think their exjob/company they worked for is crap?

Usually people at the top who get bonuses in the millions of dollars. Like this guy...

I think its a bit hard to blame this solely on square - the Japanese market has been sluggish for more than ten years. That said, they haven't developed much of value in recent years, though they've published some gold like DX: HR.

Who is he comparing SQE to? An oil company? SQE have done surprisingly well compared to the rest of the JP gaming industry. For one they havent gone out of business or been absorbed to a pachinko company, and they're still releasing games at a semi regular basis.

Maybe the market/economy IS that bad? 2002 and so on was the golden years for Sony based consoles where SQE primarily operates in - nowadays - not so much.

He's just pissed that his stock options isnt worth as much.

Rich Sega exec says Square is shit... big surprise here people!!!

Square has had a few rough years and they've made several bad choices, that doesn't mean people can just write them off. They'll bounce back and when they do, people like this guy will be eating humble pie.

finally the truth we all knew is here. Square has been on the decline ever since Squaresoft emerged

I think acquiring Western companies like Eidos and having games like Batman, Hitman Absolution, New Tomb Raider is a pretty good vision for the future of the company.

deusex hr was created by eidos, i knows its under squarenix now but surely its not really sqenix's credit as dev started before the acquisition?

He is absolutley right. As soon as SquareEnix accept this, they can refocus and return too their roots. If not. They will go bankrupt.

Also, does anyone stop too think, that these comments are from someone who actually cares what happens to the company?

He's working at Sega now though. I'm sure his Square Enix coment also applies to Sega in a major way... Unless he's in denial about that?

    People in glass houses...

Pretty much this. I tend to agree with the guy but it just sounds weird coming from someone currently working at Sega.

Square made great games. Enix made great games. SquareEnix has been pretty dismal.

The biggest question is why do they think people want FF13 as a trilogy?

I think it might be because SquareEnix had also been investing for quite a number of Anime and Manga. Lately I saw more SquareEnix logo on Anime rather than games, somehow.

I have not wanted a final fantasy game since Final Fantasy 10. I'm not surprised if they are not doing as well as they use to. all my friends are the same.

The title made me think it was Hironobu Sakaguchi the one roasting them, which would have been truly remarkable and painful. This is just some random managerial-type dude now working for a direct competitor. Who cares.
