Mirror's Edge 2 Is Being Made Right Now, According To Ex-EA Developer

Few recent games have had as many requests for a follow-up as Mirror's Edge. If you go buy the amount of love professed for it on the internet, the first-person freerunner charmed the vast majority of people who played it. But the 2008 release didn't sell well enough to merit a sequel and it seemed that hopes for a Mirror's Edge 2 have been in vain. Until now.

Teases have been floated over the last few years and a former EA developer has said that it's "general knowledge" that Mirror's Edge 2 is in development at EA DICE's Stockholm studios. In response to an Euroogamer article about the division, Benjamin Cousins — who's currently at ngmoco but worked on the Battlefield franchise at DICE — tweeted the following:

Cousins' comment jibes with what we here at Kotaku have heard recently. In 2009, EA CEO told Stephen Totilo that prospects for a sequel were at a crossroads and then DICE exec Karl Magnus told Totilo that fans would have to "wait and see what the future holds." Reports that a Mirror's Edge sequel would use the Frostbite 2 engine that powers Battlefield 3 have surfaced and when I interviewed EA Games president Frank Gibeau in September, he said that the company is very interested in what fans want in a Mirror's Edge sequel.

So it's seeming more like a question of when rather than if at this point. And, probably, also a question of current-gen or next-gen. Get your messenger bags ready, folks.

    FUCK. YES.

I don't give a shit what anybody else says - I love you, EA!

I said it elsewhere when I first read this, and I'll say it again here:

    Awesome. Awesome to the max.

If anyone's gonna enjoy Mirror's Edge 2, it's be....... that guy.

    Awesome news, finally =D

Man, I've been trying to find this game for ages. It just doesn't exist any more.

I remember it was being thrown out of shops everywhere for like $5, but I didn't have a 360 at the time so never bothered with it. Now I've tracked down two new copies in a secret hidden-away store but they're like $50 and I don't want to pay that much.

Really? I see it in the second-hand section of JB quite regularly. Also, eBay: http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_trksid=p3984.m570.l1313&_nkw=mirror%27s+edge+360&_sacat=0&_from=R40

Oh yeah the eBays. For some reason I forget all about that when it comes to current games, yet have package after package arriving in the mail with old stuff >_>

I have checked the preowned sections, but it's never turned up anything. It's really weird. But that seems to be a trait of 360 games in general, from what I've seen. It's like only the last two years or so of games exist, everything from beyond that just gets swept into the void, whereas Nintendo stuff has always floated around for quite a while.

ahhh console version, cashies mate always a copy at cashies for xbox

Hey dude, I saw it today at my local EB for $20. Do you want me to get it and post it your way? Let me know!

Huh, how about that. Just went and searched on their site, and it now actually comes up with results. Thanks for the offer, not really necessary though because it looks like it's all over the place now. Guess they decided to release it from their vault or something.

        Still, a very strange situation.

Awesome, I'm quite excited as to what new features will be included.
    Free roam?
    Different Characters?

Either way I'll buy it ^_^

Not much I can say except - About damn time!

So... EA just stopped enforcing non-disclosure agreements?

Well the guy no longer works at EA, so as long as he wasn't aware of it before he left then the NDA wouldn't apply. It would obviously apply to the guys who are actually working on the game, but good luck figuring out which one of them it was.

If this game is released with a good modding tools, I can see some amazing potential. Something similar to the Trials level creator. We could have custom made levels going up online for people to compete in time trials on.

Oh man I'm so happy to read this. Have played through the original massive amounts of times and have been hoping for a long time to see a sequel. I am excite! Mirror's Edge was such a unique game.

I opened the article to check the comments section expecting to see a string of jokes about 'buying love on the internet' (see second sentence of article), but noooo - everybody's talking about how excited they are for the sequel. But I can easily jump on this hype train too - I mean, even the iphone version was cool!

LoL, I was so excited about a sequel I totally missed that joke!

Nice. Mirror's Edge was way too good a game to fall into the one off category. I'm hoping the sequel refines the controls a bit more and creates something that can be brought over to other FPS games. Seems like such a waste to finally have a first-person game that allows fluid movement even at high speeds without the rest of the FPS genre taking advantage of the advancement.

Mirrors edge is the best game ever!!!! But I love the graphics the battlefield graphics are good but the engine that mirrors edge used are so good and mirrors edgy
