Talk Amongst Yourselves

This is where Kotaku readers go to talk about the stuff we're not already posting about. Think of it as the official unofficial Kotaku community forum.

You know what I really like about this track?
The way the lyrics describe a fling between Magnetman and Roll, and how he's trying to charm her back and is calling her 'girl' all the time.

Makes me picture Magnetman as portrayed by Ryan Gosling.

Congratulations, you've escaped with your body intact. Your mind? Well....

      Dear God, that was hard.

On the plus side, the Commonwealth has just paid me about $120 to post jokes online.

I don't know if that was a joke. If so, stop. If not.. well, stop anyway.

I'm not joking. That was last page. I'm now being my usual absolutely straight-faced dead serious self.

Maybe you've transitioned from blatantly bad jokes to subtle jokes that are so bad they sound like normal sentences, and all you're saying this page are jokes in disguise.

            I am now paranoid.

If this was my cunning plan all along, I would be extremely proud of myself...

      Never forget. Page Six.

      *lays wreath on monument*

So after consulting with myself I'm thinking of crowd sourcing the Buddy-Cop film. JVTD was a great movie (and actually quite expensive) and I want to make the next one bigger and better (and at least 3 times the length) with sets and props and dollys and an awesome crane shot at the end!

Now, this isn't a definite plan. I'd obviously have to look into Blu-ray/DVD pressing, poster printing, T-shirts and stuff for the tiers. Honestly, I'm not sure we could raise enough money but it's definitely something I think should be looked into. There were so manty times shooting JVTD that I wished we'd had just a little bit more money to spend or a second camera shooting from a different angle.

Concern has been expressed that JVTD was as good as it was because we paid for it. I couldn't disagree more. I think JVTD was as good as it was because so many amazing people worked hard to make the best film they possibly could given what they had at their disposal.

Also: A CRANE! AW YEAH! *makes crane noises*

Aaaaaaaanyway, that's my plan. I think it's a good 'un. Like I said, it may be that kickstarter/pozible isn't for isn't for us and if that's the case, it won't happen. But it's something I think bears looking into, and the sooner the better as a larger budget would definitely affect the script.

In the mean time, I'm looking for volunteers!

I've had an idea for a short kicking around since around the time we first started talking about JVTD (Around Nov last year?) and I need people think they can do some improv dialogue on screen about their actor friend who has a few screws loose. It's a mockumentary called Life In Motion.

    *makes more crane noises*

*joins in on the crane noise making*
(doesn't even know what cranes sound like)
(the machine things or the birds)

        THat sounds about right.

Maybe a bit more like a robot. Like the terminator? Vvvvvvvvvvvt! Crcksht! Vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvt!

It's almost the same as the noise Transformers make when they transform, you spell it just the way it sounds - easy!

Oh man, is this that idea you were telling me about that one time? *vague* I loved that idea!

I think the idea of getting funding is good but the reward tiers might be difficult. You've gotta look at how it's been for Pez, for example. So much of the money he got was used on paying for the reward tiers, the hoodies/shirts, and shipping etc. Just gotta remember that if we do go down that road, a good portion of that money will go into fulfilling those tiers!

This is true - you gotta factor in all the costs associated with rewards/fees/etc or you'll not make enough to get the actual film made. Most Kickstartery sites will take 4-5% right off the top, so be ready. And Paypal will take another 3.5%. Be ready. Also, I don't know if it's considered taxable income for your enterprise/business - might be worth investigating.

That's why it would need a LOT of looking into. The sooner we look, the sooner we can rule it out if it looks too expensive. The sad matter of the fact is, to make this film look cheaper than JVTD, we will have to spend a lot more money and a great deal of the JVTD budget came out of our (mostly my) pockets. Not sure we can do that again.

        CRAAAAAAAAAAANE! *more crane noises*

We'll make your crane dream come true. Somehow!

Actually, a crane (or device to that effect) would be the easiest of all the equipment to get. Might even be able to borrow something for free.

Most film schools would probably let you hire one for minimal fee, or just hit up a film student who can get one for free and give them a producer credit :)

Then this is gonna be the easiest dream fulfillment I've ever been involved in!

Yeah, make the tiers more like cameos or parts in the film. Character naming rights. Your name in a special funny credit. The more "rewards" you can do that don't cost you anything, the better.
I'm also wiling to donate my services for sewing for instance a unique quilt for a high bidder or something.

May be of interest, Monte Cook just wrote a book about his kickstarter campaign which was quite successful.

Can't speak as to the usefulness of it, but here:

Cheers dude! I shall bookmark that shiznit for later perusal! \o/

When would you be wanting people for improv? Because I love improvisation.

Actually, mostly I like being wanky, and calling myself an "actor." But it's basically the same thing.

        Brains brains brains brains

Something don't call me Explosions for nothing

        Friday Friday

"I never did tell you why they call me ExploSean, did I?"

Not for a while. It's really just in the very early planning stages.

I'd be keen to get involved! I missed out on JVTD due to life being an uncool guy.

I am more than happy to look over scripts and kick around ideas. In terms of face-to-face involvement, things get a bit tricker due to crazy multi-kids life and interstate travel (yes, ACT to NSW is interstate, and I'm sticking with that).

        ACT isn't a state. I'm a forner and even I know THAT!

I was actually gonna talk to you about "Life in Motion" this week.

      Email me.

Alas Shane, it seems our time has come to an end! /o\

We'll always have page 6. We can always go back and make more jokes.

I already sent an email to Mark. It's his training ground. We have to make it as good as possible.

I have to say, you sir are the dad joke master. I have learned a lot from the previous page.

To be absolutely honest, they weren't all me. Some of them I had to google for topics, sorry.

And you did it all without me. :(

Is having a Leaving Freeze Behind Extravaganza becoming a trendy new thing?

You obviously take your job too seriously. Next time be ready, and you can lead us to a glorious new age of terribad paternal humour

        Last edited 13/11/12 3:26 pm

Shane didn't want to hear my incredibly long joke. So I typed it out for him and now it is lost to the madness that was page 6.

It's probably better that way, although anyone interested can read it here.

Keep in mind, that's the short version.

      TL;DR !

Also, just calling out for opinions, does this re-open the floodgates for JOKEY PAGE SEVEN?
        I think it might... :P

I don't see any jokes here.

      What.... But.... How can you.....

The red ping pong ball one? I just read it because I was stuck on Page 6 and couldn't get out.

I upvoted you for it, by the way. It was one of only two jokes to make me smile.

Okay, so Dad Joke Page Six is now a thing on TAY. See you next week for more.

Gonna need to practise some jokes in anticipation or next week!

This is even worse than Erotic Page Eighteen.

I think you spelled 'even worse' wrong. It's double-you, ay, why, space, bee, ee, tee, tee, ee, arrrrrrr!

It's page seven, and that means it's time for a repost of...

    TAY Secret Santa!

    Here's how it will work:

Everyone who wishes to participate should send me:
    - Your TAY handle
    - Your address details
    - Gift preferences (specifically, things that you don't want / can't have for any reason, or hints if you wish - not everyone knows everyone that well)
    - Whether you would prefer a local TAYbie to send to (I will endeavour to pair up people locally to save shipping)
    - If you wish to purchase for a specific person, let me know. If there is someone you do not wish to buy for, please also let me know (I'll keep it a secret). Keep in mind that I won't allow you to buy for a specific person if it would result in doubling up or sending to someone who isn't participating.

You will be given a semi-random TAYbie to send something to. Selection will be made by me, to pair up people who wish to be local. You should remain anonymous to this person if possible. Value limit of around $30 including postage. You may go under or over this limit if necessary but please keep it as a guideline. No perishable items eg food. It goes without saying, but please don't send anyone something illegal or which is not able to be mailed through Australia Post.

Participation means you must commit to sending something to someone (and not just receiving).

I will be coordinating the efforts but will not participate myself, as I will be choosing the assignment of people to each other and thus have a conflict of interest. In the event that someone has to pull out, I will step in to fill in the gap so that everyone still receives a gift, but I can only afford to do this as a once-off. If you agree to participate you must have the expectation you will be able to do so.

You will be revealing your personal address to only two people: myself and your Secret Santa. I will not leak this information to anyone else. By participating you agree that you will not misuse the address of the TAYbie you're buying for. By participating you also acknowledge the risk involved - if you are not willing to take this risk or share this information, please don't participate.

Deadline for signing up shall be Midnight on the 19th of November, which is one week from now. This is to allow enough time for gifts to be purchased and mailed in time for Christmas.

    To sign up,
email me: atomicstrawberry (at) gmail (dot) com
    twitter DM me: @atomstrawberry

out of curiosity guys, why on earth do people still even use hamachi?

tunngle is SO MUCH BETTER and much more user friendly. everyone just logs onto tunngle, joins the same channel, and bang theyre on the same network.

Hamachi mostly rode on popularity. It's pretty well know and, with having used Tunngle, it is really easy to set up. Create new network, give people the address and password and they join it.
It's also very nice at changing network connection priorities which screws people over if they don't know about it (and most don't)...

Now why didn't you tell me this sooner?

          I haven't used Hamachi for over a year :P

 know...all the hate and such.

sort of what i was hinting at... i mean take nova for instance.... it messed up his network settings and interfered with his usb dongle. tunngle doesnt, once you log out, its disabled.

Oh god I have no used Hamachi in years, so much hatred for that program.

Day one in the dive shop is almost over and I'm hating it as much if not more than expected. But you know what? I've decided not to let it bother me. I'm just going to turn up and do what is required of me. No more, no less. I'm not going to pour myself into a thankless job that I'm really only using as an income stream until I end up where I want to be.

    So here's to apathy!

I would agree with you, but I couldn't be bothered.

Apathy is pretty okay, I guess.

Everybody who thinks Salt & Vinegar isn't the best flavour of chips is wrong.

Cheese Supreme Doritos and his friend Light & Tangy would like to have a word with you.

Look, I like Salt and Vinegar, but.

In moderation, Light and Tangy is amazeballs.

And Kettle Chilli chips are fantasballs.

Also, adding "balls" onto the end of words is wonderballs.

There is an appalling lack of Miss Vickie's Sweet Chilli and Sour Cream chips in this part of the world, and no flavour you offer will fill that hole in my heart.

Trust me man I was born right next to the US the land of tasty beat-your-heart-with-a-proverbial-stick food.

      Last edited 13/11/12 3:52 pm

Well, there's Red Rock Deli Sweet Chilli and Sour cream. Could try that?

I have no idea what this 'Red Rock' is. For the sake of Snacktaku, I shall enquire about this immediately at my nearest supermarket.

They're a more expensive brand than the average, but they're pretty great. Plus, chips are always on sale somewhere.

They're Smiths' (I think) line of more 'gourmet' chip flavours. Sea Salt & Balsamic Vinegar is the best! (and are what prompted me to state the fact that they are the best)

S&V is good in small doses. Too much and my mouth dries up and starts feeling weird.

Now, Chicken flavour, on the other hand...and Light & Tangy, too.

I believe it's you who is wrong on every count

      Smith's - Cheese and onion
      Thins - Light and Tangy
Red rock deli - Honey soy chicken

None of which are salt and vinegar.

Words fail to describe how right you are.

But honourable mention goes to Heinz Tomato Sauce flavoured chips (can you still get those?)

I need to track some of those down...they were seriously awesome. Like, a more awesome version of Samboy Atomic Tomato... *drools*

Oh that's right, Ketchup chips are a rarity 'round here, aren't they?

I dunno about specifically Heinz Tomato Sauce chips, though. A quick google search tells me of two brands that use Heinz- Lays, of which I am familiar with back in Canada, and Herr's, which I haven't seen as much, and not that particular flavour.

Australia needs more dill and ranch related foodstuffs. Mostly chips.

Dill is great. Eggs benedict, omelettes, errthang.

Much as I like ranch, I'm fearful of it. Mostly because I don't know what's in it, and therefore can't replicate it.

Agreed on the dill. Salmon? Dill sauce. Chips? Dill sauce. Dill sauce? Dill Sauce.

Ranch is delicious, but it occurs to me that I have no idea what's in it as well. I assume happiness and ground up unicorn horns. And probably mayo or something, I dunno.

                1 cup mayonnaise

                1/2 cup sour cream

                1/2 teaspoon dried chives

                1/2 teaspoon dried parsley

                1/2 teaspoon dried dill weed

                1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

                1/4 teaspoon onion powder

                1/8 teaspoon salt

                1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper

I could kiss you right now.
Guess who's makin' ranch dressing tomorrow night \o/

I, uh, think that's dill sauce, actually.

Unless I've been making ranch sauce for years without me actually realizing it. But screw it either way, Mayonnaise and Sour Cream together is goddamn amazing.

No idea. Just googled it and all the recipes were pretty much the same.

So they are. However, depending on whether you want a sauce or dressing, you may have to vary the recipe a bit.

                  Still delicious.

Doritos Smokey BBQ was amazing but they discontinued that a long, long time ago...
They also had this weird 3D thing once and the 'green' flavour was cool
Kettle Honey Baked Ham WAS good, Chilli is still great though
Red Rock Deli Dijon Mustard, Honey Soy Chicken are pretty cool as well

      S&V lolnogetout.

      Also Lime and black pepper.

I nominate DC for anti-kudos. For being the most prolific downvoter I have ever seen anywhere ever. :P

On that note, I'm going home. Thanks for such a punny afternoon, everyone!

    Last edited 13/11/12 3:52 pm

Hey, I saw the pre-edit grump part. *shakes fist* Get off my lawn, boy.

Have a good one, man. :D

I got my first DC downvote today. Worst wingman ever.

On the other hand, pretty sure he's the most prolific upvoter I've ever seen anywhere ever too. Balance is restored.

      You're going home?
      Guessing I'll go home too.

How bout them ACT quittin' times?

I look at the influx of upvotes by DC and I am impressed. But wait. What is this? I go to page one, and there are comments without upvotes.

DC, if you are to the claim of the mantle of "Bestest Upvoterer" you know what you must do. UPVOTE EVERY SINGLE COMMENT ON EVERY SINGLE PAGE. Good luck.

I had such high hopes for you

Whenever you see a post that DC hasn't upvoted, it means he is seriously annoyed at that person... or dead.

        What's a D.C. downvote mean then?!

I think it means he really, really hates dad jokes.

Or loves them so much but is jealous that he can't produce them as good as you (OR YOUR GOOGLING SOURCES)

I think he's already got the title of "besterest upvoter". Hell, I'm sure that title is just one big upvote anyway :P

So many down votes from D.C :(

Why do you hat me D.C?

Also, does anyone know the reason that the ad to the side on Allure sites destroys any computer I'm using it on including phones and tablets?

No problems on my computer but my phone lags so bad when it's on desktop mode. Started happening when they implemented the account system.

Obviously you don't have a enough gigabytes of anything!

Really, not a clue. I've not had an issue with any of the sites since I turned adblock off to use this damn upvote system.

My Tesselatoon Amalgams mustn't be compatible with the Osmartion Vertex.

See if your beryllium hyperspheres were more cromulent they'd have less problem calculating osmartion vertices

So how's that page looking D.C.?

Lots of green upvotes everywhere? :P

Makes a nice contrast from page six, the page of red.

    TF2sdays, who's interested?

If we can get 6 people, that'd be freakin' awesome. If we can get more, all the better (Looking at you, Virus__!)
Rize, Budgie and I found an MvM server over the weekend that allowed for players to fight as the BLU (in this case, robots) team. It's a little buggy, but hella fun.
    So, who's in?!

I'll be on at a reasonable time this evening, too. No schnitzel night tonight :P

      No schnitzel?

Hey mang, I ain't going back to that pub. Got the heeby-jeebies last time.
If it's any consolation, I've already put schnitzels on our next meat order, so I'll have them en mass by the time I'm back from holidays \o/

Fair enough! I retract my vote.

You'd think the messiah of schnitzel night would make some at home but... MAYBE I'M WRONG

I don't have any sheep readily available for tenderising.
I could use my dog, but I'm not sure how far I could stretch it out.

...and as much as he's used to it, I don't think my brother would appreciate me chasing him around the house with a meat tenderiser.
This is the end of days. Schnitzeldrought.

Eh, sorry for abusing the up vote/down vote thing today... again... :S

I thought I went crazy when I clicked on the votes and no names were showing up!

No need to apologise, you bum.

I've clearly got too much time on my hands Haha!

          Don't we all?

Holiday boredom already hit me haha earlier today :P

          Learn an instrument D.C.!

It's okay. I understand that you hat me and never want to talk to me again.

Ill be in my room crying into my pillow.

You made your bed when you 'alloyed' yourself with Shane. :P

(Aw, Freeze. I could never hat you.)

This amazon delivery thingy could get dangerous, certainly as I need to bulk buy to make it worthwhile.

For those who are interested I got Game of thrones, Citadels and 7 wonders.

What is this bulk buy business and how can I get in on it?

I buy multiple boardgames from amazon at the same time and then they ship it all together
If you like I'll let you know next time I am ordering

Any Melbourne peeps interested in a Technical Writer job? Opening in our team.

Can I get it if I have no skills or experience and refuse to move to Melbourne?

So uh, there's gonna be a Mass Effect 4 fair enough.

It would be nice if they did a spin off of Mass Effect. If it was set during the "First Contact" wars, that would be awesome.

Or a porno called Blast Effect

Whoa! Totally received two new 3DS letters! Got them on the 27th of October though so sorry for the slow replies.

Freeze you might not want to see the reply...

So some friends have been able to get their hands on BLOPS2. I didn't think it was out until tomorrow o.0

      Released last night man!
I think it's the PC version that unlocks tonight, although you can still purchase it now.

Yeah like half of my online friends were playing it :P

Pretty sure it's out already! (Dick Smith ad on the side says "Available Now")

Did all of DC's upvotes get wiped off the face of the earth?

DC wiped all of DC's upvotes off the face of the earth.
I (unwillingly) removed his title of Besterest Upvoter

Man, why are tablets so expensive. I'm quite worried that 7" will be too small for mum but do i really have to pay an extra $150 for 3 inches?

Can you take your mum to try out the two different sizes? I would say that would be your best bet.

Yeah, any idea what she wants?

I guess if it's for games a bigger one would be better but smaller ones are good for just general browsing since they're lighter and more portable.

EDIT: My dad has an iPad and a Kindle Fire (smaller tablet). One for upstairs and one for downstairs :P...

        Last edited 13/11/12 6:54 pm

It's for games so i was thinking a bigger one.

Is it a surprise for her or does she know she's getting a tablet? $150 is quite a decent amount so if you can, take her somewhere where she can see them and see if she's happy with the 7 inch one.

She knows I'm getting her one.
At the same time she keeps sayign there's no rush but I feel guilty that the netbook didn't work out

The nexus 7 is awesome and really light. Light enough to hold in one hand. The cheap price is just a bonus it's a fantastic tablet.

Not a single snigger about 7" being too small for your mum?
      I'm impressed, TAY :)

    Hello all wonderful tayberinos!
I am bright and shiny and happy today cause I got myself a job! Just thought I would share my happiness with the world.
