Talk Amongst Yourselves

This is where Kotaku readers go to talk about the stuff we're not already posting about. Think of it as the official unofficial Kotaku community forum.

Got SWTOR all updated! Who else is going to try it out? We should all start new characters, group up, and take over the galaxy :P
I'm going to start again as a smuggler, I think.

Good Morning TAY! Hope you all had a decent weekend!

Walking Dead Episode 5 out this week!

All that Walking Dead talk on weekend TAY nearly broke me, man. *sobs*

It will be your game of the year. This > Spec Ops!

I hope so, pal. If I get to play it at all this year. December 4 boxset release date, but Telltale take forever to ship. (Atleast for the Sam & Max seasons.)

          Last edited 19/11/12 8:57 am

Could always buy it first :P

            Just sayin'!

ENABLER! You'd make a good drug pusher. :P

Was just about to look that up. Im so freaking excited about this.. I want all the walking deads now.

Same man! It makes me want to go back to the TV show but I doubt that'll ever happen...

I'm keen to try out the comics now but i would love more games.

Season 2 of the game is scheduled to happen!

            I hope it's completely new characters/places!

Guys, if you like the game because of its grimness, you will LOVE the comics.

I can't get my walking dead to work :(
Think it is time for full delete and re-install

Hi TAYbies. How was your weekends? Mine, I'm ashamed to say, consisted of far too much Lobby Ops. I'm enjoying it (mostly) but trying to find Aussie servers with a party on PC has been a lesson in really crappy menu dubstep.

I thought I played a lot of Blops 2 but CoD Elite reckons I've only played matchmaking for 2 hours. Maybe I spent a lot of time in customs, training, zombies and campaign?

Anyway, I'm pleased that I have my k/d ratio above 1 (my personal minimum). Currently at 1.26 which I'm pretty happy with.

I'm yet to check out any of my stats, but I hope I'm above 1 at the moment. I started really slowly in multi.
Had some interesting matches over the weekend. One HC-TDM I went pistol only and got 7/1, and barely saw anyone the entire match. Another was something like 18/5, which was much more fun :P

According to my in-game combat record I've, uh, clocked in 17hrs of MP. Played the first mission and a half of the SP, and maybe an hour of zombies. Most of that was yesterday - got distracted trying out silly kits with some friends and next thing you know, bam, 10pm. :[

For the most part I haven't had any big issues with servers, though I've been queuing solo. How many people are in your party when you're having these problems?

Queuing solo has been fine, as long as I stick to the more populated modes. A tad frustrating though when trying to find a Hardpoint game.

Our party typically was 4 - we had one instance all weekend where we ended up in a 4-bar lobby which was grand. But the other times were typically US, bar one game which was somewhere in Europe..

Most of the time one of us would get into a server and we'd all join off them eventually. :D

Morning all! Zavvi have Max Payne 3 for 14.95GBP (~$20ish). Recommend?

Also, check out this link, and consider involving yourself in the inaugural TAYLend program, where TAYbies are able to pool their collective resources to gain temporary access to a much wider library of games than they would otherwise be able to afford!

Hey, Shane! Hope this day finds you well? How was your long weekend?

Max Payne 3 was pretty damn good. Certainly worth that price atleast! Almost plays like a really violent Uncharted. Story is great in an over-the-top, Noir kind of way too.

Hey DC! This day finds me suffering massive hayfever and my foot's still sore, and I only got about three hours of broken sleep last night, because kids.

...But I'm okay! I spent the weekend ordering stuff for the conventions I'll be hitting up next year. Adelaide and Melbourne for sure, Perth probably (if flights ever come down in price /o\) and maybe some non-OzComicCon cons if the mood/opportunity strikes (I'd like to hit QLD and Sydney at some point, for example). So I'm feeling pretty good, kind of excited (and a little terrified), even though the next one is four months away.

        How was your weekend?

        Last edited 19/11/12 8:54 am

Not too shabby in an all I did was refresh TAY kind of way! :S

What's the appeal of going to Perth over Sydney, if you don't mind me asking? Also, if you make it to Brisbane we'll have to have a meet Shane meat. If you're feeling anti-social we'll just visit you at your booth for five minutes then you can begin the healing process. :D Hope you feel better too.

          Last edited 19/11/12 8:53 am

I know the folks who work Oz ComicCon and they give me a free table in artist alley (saving ~$300+).

Ideally, I'd like to do the Supanova circuit as well as the Oz ComicCon circuit, but there's money and leave from work to consider.

Like I said, in an ideal world, I'd like to hit Sydney and QLD as well, but because they'd be Supanova or Armageddon, I'd have to fork out the extra for a table, which would definitely impact my chances of breaking even for the event. :)

And I'd probably be up for a meat if I came Brisbane-side... though if I fly in Friday, fly out Monday and have to set-up/pack-up as well, there might only be small windows of opportunities in the evenings!

            I haven't written it off, yet. It's just a big we'll see.

            Last edited 19/11/12 9:01 am

Sounds like an adventure, whatever you do! Good luck with it all!

Yeah man, That is an awesome price for Max Payne!

Good morning! (Afternoon for me though, of sunday yet! :P)

I've heard very good things about the game. You need a beefy machine for it but at that price it sounds more than nice! (Unless you would rather wait for the mandatory Steam wallet-draining Sale.)

There will be big Amazon Black Friday sales too. And bundles everywhere. Daaaaaaaaaaaaaamn.

Also, random, but I can't stop playing Dark Souls. I'm in NG++ onwards to, for the first time, aim to get all the bloody achievements. 36/41 so far.

PRAISE THE SUN! (I'm in that covenant so, yep, I'm officially a sunbro 100%!)

Haha nice! Sunbro is the best Covenant!

My 360 is beef enough \o/
        Thanks :)

Good luck with the achivements. That's one hell of an undertaking!

        Last edited 19/11/12 8:42 am

I would rate EB 10/10 on their ridiculously pretentious survey if I was guaranteed a Streetpass everytime I entered their store. Even if it was a demo unit that gave me one. That demo unit and I would be BFFs and I would Streetpass Quest them all the time.

Also maaaaaaaan, that Jet Set Radio, huh? Sorry, JET SET RAY-DEEEEEEEE-OOOOOOOOOOOOH!
Much better with a 360 controller, but still kind of bad.

Good luck today, Nova! Gonna be awesome!

Morning all! Hope all the Brisbane folks made it through the storm okay?

    Last edited 19/11/12 8:39 am

All of it missed me. Just Thunder and lightning with a bit of rain!

Lost power on Saturday night for about an hour or so, but otherwise wasn't too bad.

    Guess what guys?!

Don't forget there is a meat in December for those who are in Melbourne!
When: Saturday the 15th of December at 11 o'clock
Where: Meeting at Fed square, near Beer deluxe
What you're expected to bring: Just cash because Yoyogi's doesn't accept card (at least last time I went)
    What are we doing: Eating!
Why: Because Virus is in Melbourne!

Because my birthday is on the 20th, and Negative Zero's is early December, I was going to either bring cake, or cupcakes. Anything anyone allergic to? Or don't like?

(Sorry nova! I read your name and accidentally placed it in place of Neg 0)

    Last edited 19/11/12 8:48 am

You must really not like the TAYbies for you to bring cupcakes as a birthday celebration.

        Revengance to all!

        They're not revengance cupcakes

But that's not how cupcakes work!

I'm on a no-grains diet at the moment so cupcakes might not work for me. Feel free to bring for everyone else though.

      Hi Scree

Sorry but I don't think I will be able to make it, that is the weekend we are doing pre-christmas christmas with my family.
We will be heading to the folks on Saturday so a small possibility that we can drop in on the way through but certainly don't count on it

Sorry to hear you can't make it. Especially after I shifted the date 3 times >_<
It's alright though. I hope you have a good time anyway!

Jumped in SWTOR last night to check out how it all is after the change to F2P. Some of the limitations are a little annoying, but mostly cause I got used to accessing some of the stuff I now can't.
Having said that, it's still a pretty awesome game. I'd be keen to see lots of people jump in and give it a go, so people with plenty of download limit should grab it then pass the files on to others. I know not everyone here would enjoy having to download the 20-30GB required :P

I started playing again. Made a Bounty Hunter on the oceanic pvp, which I think is called Master Dah'nela or something. I forgot how fun it is to play an MMO that doesn't lag.

        Hells yeah it is :D
I have a bunch of characters on that server, none higher than 15 (I think), and I know Cake and Lambo have some on there too.

Repost because Monday at reasonable hour:

Proudly brought to you by "This could kill a brown dog"

Leftover soup with potato gem croutons

Seriously guys, this looks like it came from Satan's anus. I took the week's leftovers (goulash, rendang and laksa being the main constituents), defrosted them and slopped it all together in one bowl. The consistency wasn't right, so I threw it in the blender, after which it was nice and smooth.
And brown/black. Oh god, that colour will haunt me for years to come.
Adding some potato gems to act as croutons gave a nice change in texture, although they quickly were assimilated into the seething black ooze that was the leftover soup.

One slight addition; IT TASTES FREAKING AMAZING. Holy crap, this is possibly the best late-night snack I've ever made. I turned the light off so I didn't have to look at it, and man, it's pretty freakin' good. The rendang gives it a really nice punch, which is somewhat offset by the swirl of sour cream I put in there for the goulash. The seafood in the laksa didn't quite fit, but was not necessarily an unwelcome feature.

All in all, I'd do it again, but only if blindfolded. That looked positively vile.
    9/5 Shiggys/Bishes.

The obvious solution to your problem is to gouge your eyes out. I foresee no drawbacks or downsides whatsoever.

Today is the deadline if you want to participate in TAY Secret Santa.

Everyone who wishes to participate should send me:
    - Your TAY handle
    - Your address details
    - Gift preferences (specifically, things that you don't want / can't have for any reason, or hints if you wish - not everyone knows everyone that well)
    - Whether you would prefer a local TAYbie to send to (I will endeavour to pair up people locally to save shipping)
    - If you wish to purchase for a specific person, let me know. If there is someone you do not wish to buy for, please also let me know (I'll keep it a secret). Keep in mind that I won't allow you to buy for a specific person if it would result in doubling up or sending to someone who isn't participating.

You will be given a semi-random TAYbie to send something to. Selection will be made by me, to pair up people who wish to be local. You should remain anonymous to this person if possible. Value limit of around $30 including postage. You may go under or over this limit if necessary but please keep it as a guideline. No perishable items eg food. It goes without saying, but please don't send anyone something illegal or which is not able to be mailed through Australia Post.

Participation means you must commit to sending something to someone (and not just receiving).

I will be coordinating the efforts but will not participate myself, as I will be choosing the assignment of people to each other and thus have a conflict of interest. In the event that someone has to pull out, I will step in to fill in the gap so that everyone still receives a gift, but I can only afford to do this as a once-off. If you agree to participate you must have the expectation you will be able to do so.

You will be revealing your personal address to only two people: myself and your Secret Santa. I will not leak this information to anyone else. By participating you agree that you will not misuse the address of the TAYbie you're buying for. By participating you also acknowledge the risk involved - if you are not willing to take this risk or share this information, please don't participate.

Deadline for signing up shall be Midnight on the 19th of November (TODAY). This is to allow enough time for gifts to be purchased and mailed in time for Christmas.

    To sign up,
email me: atomicstrawberry (at) gmail (dot) com
    twitter DM me: @atomstrawberry

I realise my request was a little... exotic. It's already going to be a big workload for you to organise so don't go too much out of your way for me.

Yeah I was looking at it and I think it's going to be fiddly to do.

I spent most of this weekend watching the Starcraft World Championships and playing games I haven't played in a long while.

    Mostly mobile games.

Tiny Wings and Collision Effect are still amazing. I don't know why I stopped playing them. I just wish that I could get that magical 175000 points in Tiny Wings so that I can finally get the next nest. Or that I could keep the combo chain going in Collision Effect through the later waves so that when I start getting combos of 6 or more, I start getting ridiculous amounts of points.

I also tried playing League of Legends again. Not to toot my own horn, but I'm pretty amazing at that game. In one game I was playing as support Soraka and managed to not be completely useless despite disconnecting early in the game (thanks storm!) and then having my mouse die on me (thanks Steelseries!). The only reason I didn't dominate as AD carry in the last game is because Gorzy is the worst support ever, of all time. Also because I'm equally terribly at being the AD carry but mainly Gorzy.

I don't even get a mention for my backdoor Attackspeed Karthus skills? I freaking won the game for us. =P

        Not a mention.

Attack speed Karthus is the BEST Karthus

I built ganl boots and 5 stingers. Then upgraded 2 of the stingers into Nashor's Tooth. I snuck in to the enemy bots' base and backdoored them.

I guess today I am being one of those people who reply with Youtube comments.

I had thought steelseries mice are more reliable, given how everybody raves about them! Or was this just a one-off thing?

This is the first time that it's happened. It's a fairly new Steelseries Kana and my computer just up and decided not to recognise it. Didn't matter which USB port it was in, it just wouldn't work.

My trusty old MX518 worked in every USB port except the one that I normally have my mouse in. I suspect foul play from the Steelseries mouse, taking the USB port down with it.

"This is the first time that it's happened."

Ever. In the history of the universe.

HALO FOUUUR! NINTENDO SIXTY-FOUUUR! I scabbed a RROD Xbox 360 console from a mate this weekend, he said 'bring it back to life - it's yours'. So I turned the console upside and it's fixed, unit keeps freezing if it is not upside-down. Hired Halo 4, plowed through half the campaign, just about to start Reclaimer. Love it.

    Last edited 19/11/12 9:40 am

I'm sort of curious, what Gen in the console?

sounds like an old 360 Pro/Arcade console.

word of advice dont rotate it while the machine is on....

Xbox 360 Pro. Xenon. DEFINITELY will not move the system when it is powered.

          Last edited 19/11/12 10:12 am

      Upside... down...
What is this I don't even.

How do you even get discs into it! /o\

Hahaha! Sorry guys, I must be confusing everyone. I have the unit UPRIGHT and then I turn it upside down. So the console actually sits on top of the HDD accessory. Discs still go in easily, eject button is now right at the bottom.

Top of the morning! *tips hat*

I saw all your photos yesterday. Did you learn anything super awesome?

I learned some fun camera stuff! Mainly thanks to Dan and Google though. Also that we shot JVTD hella fast compared to yesterday's shoot.

    Greetings from Tasmania!

Mobile Kotaku doesn't seem to work very well for me...really slow to load or just completely unresponsive. D:

Same here but at least it doesn't completely crash!

It's fine when the page is relatively small though and only chugs as it fills up with more comments

Hey all! hope you all had a good weekend??? bought Black Ops 2 (PS3) Friday night only got a chance to play ONE round.... yes folks ONE round. on the plus side, that one round set my K/D ration to 1.14 and got halfway past level 5... Bad thing is my ps3 is hooked up to the same monitor as my PC, which means that i usually jump on my PS3 right after ive played something on pc....

And damn that blur and those jaggies are so damn obvious... this is why we need next gen consoles dammit.

I probably should add you on the PS3.

sure thing man, maybe we can get some blops time in!

im probably going to jump on after dinner tonight... so about 7:30...

Hi TAY! I'm not ready for Monday yet.
I broke the 400 hour mark on Team Hatress 2. I've been playing quite a bit recently - learning scout and spy (my two least favourite classes) and either I'm getting better or everyone else is getting worse.

I loved Scout once I got the hang of it! Spy is still terrible for me though :P

Spy and Demo are my least effective classes. I'm getting better with Demo, but I fear that Spy will elude me for a long time to come.

Downloading TOR as I type this. My very first MMO.

Give me a shout via Twitter/Steam if you ever need any help, or want to party up.

Important note: SWTOR is pretty fantastic as a solo game, but it really shines when you're playing in a group with friends...especially during conversations!

      All the regret =P

Eh I might download it though..

    Howdy Tayberinos

I had a weekend up at North Beach, which is a Beach that is North- my Dad's been teaching up there. I've also finally got my AC3 multiplayer working again, so am keen to do stabbing on PS3 if someone wants to join.

A Monday Morning Question: Best videogame ocean? I reckon the oceans in AC3 are actually pretty good

Might be technically dated now, but I remember the BioShock opening blew me away with the plane crash and light house. Also, the ocean taking back the city! :D

      Last edited 19/11/12 10:06 am

im going to second the ocean in Bioshock. Incredible... the motion, reflections, everything.

Because it will be waiting...for I go there...I'll find it.

        I...always...hated trying to......follow that...statement.

I always liked the Just Cause 2 ocean.
Bioshock's, when you get out of the plane at the start, was also freakin' awesome but it was more of a set piece than a consistent part of the game.

Was still nice to look out the windows any time in the game and take in the sights and sounds. :D

I'm up for some stabby-stabby as soon as I finish Darksiders II

Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. Such a pretty ocean.

Ecco the dolphin was a pretty cool guy
Think there was a skin diving game that I saw recently, not sure if on kotaku or GG. That look really pretty

      Halo CE. Silent Cartographer.
Because you could drive a jeep underwater in the ocean.

First time I saw the ocean in Rubacava in Grim Fandango was pretty amazing. The opening of Curse of Monkey Island too in fact, with Threepwood writing his log. Loved the colour palette!

One of my fave intros ever! Alongside Full Throttle and The Dig. Such epic intros

Realisation of the day: Coke heads make great coffee makers.

    That is all.

Because they're all jittery from the drugs that they make good foam?

Nah, my coffee maker is insanely hyper in the mornings, singing songs at the top of her lungs, calling out at passersby and being a bigger wake up call than my daily cappucino. She has a slightly crazy look in her eye and sometimes dances around to the loud doof doof music she has going first thing in the morning.
I was always suspicious and my suspicions were confirmed when chatting to a co-worker who the coffee maker had made friends with on facebook. She apparently messaged her to hang out after the cafe had closed so they could drink and snort lines.

My first thought when reading this was, wait, how do you use the bottle tops from Coke bottles to make coffee? Then I realised what you meant by coke head.

    My $0.02 follow.

Okay, so AC3 is not actually terrible. It's a little buggier than I'd like, and it took ages to get used to the new settings, but once you're in it, it's pretty much exactly like every other AC game. I think that five games with these mechanics is enough though, so regardless of how this one ends, I'm pretty sure I'm going to stop here.

Edit to say: "just like all the other games" is not necessarily a criticism, because the core mechanics of those games are fun, and the stories are pretty good. I'm enjoying it.

    Last edited 19/11/12 11:15 am

Yeah, I'm back on the Watch Dogs bandwagon, but pretty much done with Assassin's Creed for now.

I'm fairly sure the hive mind has spoken on this one. The game is bad and you should feel bad :p

I've pretty much given up on the series. It really is just more of the same. Couldn't bring myself to play Revelations, won't bother with AC3.

@Rize @Lambomann007 what server you lads on? Decided i'll give SWTOR a go..

I've got a level 18 Bounty Hunter and a Level 31 Jedi Consular on Master Dar'Nala (PvP). I'm going to start a Smuggler on the Oceana PvE server though.
Grouping up and starting new characters sounds like fun, that way nobody is behind. We probably won't decide what we'll do until we get together to play it though :P

Sounds good! As much as I like world PVP, PVE servers are much nicer to quest on.

As long as I can have a Rogue like character I am happy =P

I'm on Dar'Nala and have 6 characters on there, so I'd have to delete 5 to start a new one. Having said that, I made these characters cause I knew F2P would limit my character creation so they're all low-ish levels.
