There Are Now As Many As 400,000 Wii U Owners In The US

It's been just over a week since Nintendo ushered in the next-generation of home console hardware with the launch of the Wii U in the United States. In that time, the new device has sold 400,000 units.

CNET reports that the Wii U just edged out the Wii, which sold 300,000 units in the same time frame. When the Wii launched in November 2005, the motion-control console sold through 600,000 units in its first eight days. By way of comparison, Microsoft's Xbox 360 console debuted on Nov. 21, 2005 and sold 326,000 units by the end of that month.

It's worth comparing those numbers to the sales notched by the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini, which belong to the class of devices seen as most threatening to the AAA console business where Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft thrive. In the first weekend of the new iPad lineup, Apple sold a combined 3 million units of the fourth-generation iPad and iPad Mini. Meanwhile, the company moved 5 million iPhone 5 handsets in that device's first weekend.

The Wii U hits Australian shelves on November 30.

Wii U selling better then the Wii is a damn good start.

Edit: it took 8 days for the Wii to sell 600000 units, it took Wii U one day to sell 400000 units. At this rate the Wii U will out sell the originals Wii's launch by a healthy margin. Also its also interesting to note that its doing alot better then the 360s launch who like the Wii U is launching unopposed.

Except everywhere is out of stock and Nintendo don't have any more to ship to retailers.

I wonder if it could be in the running to break Kinect's record (if that hasn't been broken already by Apple)

    I'm confused....

So the Wii-U sold 400,000 in just over a week AND the Wii sold 300,000 units in the same week?

I was confused on how (in this day and age) Wii can pump out 300,000 console sales in a week.
I guess black Friday specials in the states had them for $100 for a normal bundle or $130 with 2 games.

""CNET reports that the Wii U just edged out the Wii, which sold 300,000 units in the same time frame. ""

Is selling 100,000 more units really "just" edging out your predecessor?

Perhaps more surprising is that the DS outsold the 3DS 275000 to 250000 over the holiday. Just like the Wii, I'm sure it was in the bargain bin.

One of those is mine. Expected delivery to me in AU Dec 3 :(

It's okay guys the status updated to Nov 29 delivery! Crisis over! :p
