This Halo iPhone Game Feels Like A Parody Of Itself

There are tacky advertisements. And then there’s Halo 4: King of the Hill Fueled by Mountain Dew (actual name), a new promotional iOS game that asks you to go to the store and scan in bags of Doritos and bottles of Mountain Dew in order to play.

Let me repeat that. You have to scan in bags of Doritos and bottles of Mountain Dew in order to play.

Oh and also you battle at 7-11.

Here’s the app’s description from the iTunes Store, where it’s live in New Zealand (and will presumably be live here later today):

Halo 4: King of the Hill Fueled by Mountain Dew Win Double XP Matches and Digital Halo 4 Gear! Mountain Dew, Doritos and 7-Eleven - in partnership with Xbox, 343, and Ogmento - are helping bring the Halo 4 experience into the real world with this location-based promotional game! So, yes. Halo 4: King of the Hill Fueled by Mountain Dew. Society has reached this point. Sometimes I feel like we’re living in a Futurama parody of what modern life is like.

"Use Augmented Reality & Computer Vision technology to scan Mountain Dew and Doritos products to obtain supplies!"

Man people have fancy ways of saying "camera" nowadays :P
Oh geez this is so ridiculous.

Can someone explain how a glorified barcode scanner counts as "Augmented Reality"? Or does a little Master Chief jump out of the bag of Doritos and do battle for snackfood supremacy?

This is terrible. The kind of thing zynga would come up with.

I hate where the video game industry is heading... *curls up into foetus position and cries

Love it - live everywhere in the world (presumably) but certain prizes are locked to certain countries...

Yeah, but the prizes are a bit of a moot point, really. Surely there can't be that many people that are sufficiently lacking in self respect to actually "play" this anyway? So you'd hope for the sake of the human race that not too many prizes will actually be getting claimed.

Dont discount the stupidity of people - especially iPhone owners
