Too Many People Are Stealing This Terrible Call Of Duty/Halo Joke

Boy, those young men sure do love video games, don't they? And wouldn't you know it, two of the biggest games of the year, Halo 4 and Black Ops II, just came out! Surely there is some pithy joke to be made here, some quick gibe about how men will be playing those games and therefore neglecting their girlfriends?

Turns out there is indeed a joke to be made. Not a very good one, but a joke. It combines Halo, Black Ops II and the "Movember" cancer-awareness movement into a comedy hat-trick:

With no shave November, Halo 4 and Black Ops 2 this month, I'm predicting teen pregnancy will be at an all time low.

Okay, kinda low-hanging fruit, but it gets the job done. But here's the thing: It's not just one person making this joke. It's practically everybody. They all use the exact same language, referring to Movember as "No Shave November," and they all refer to Black Ops II as Black Ops 2. Check it out:

There are hundreds, probably thousands more -- a Twitter search of "Halo Teen Pregnancy" reveals new people stealing the joke every minute. Who made the joke first? It's difficult to tell, but it seems possible that it was a fresh-faced young fellow named Joseph Anderson way back on November 5:

Of course, this sort of thing is rampant on Twitter -- plenty of people make timely, RT-ready jokes and see them almost instantly co-opted by a gaggle of me-too tweeters, parody accounts, and faceless phonies.

What does this tell us about the state of Twitter? That it's a hive of scum and villainy, where a guy can't make an honest joke without having it ripped off by a bunch of strangers? Yeah, probably. More importantly, what does it tell us about the state of video games and teen pregnancy? Only time will tell.

This just tells me there's too many Dudebros hanging out in my videogames!

14th Kotaku article about Black Ops II today.

Well, Black Ops II (arguably one of the biggest releases of the year) just came out and this is a video game website. I'm not really sure what your point is

You don't find anything funny about the fact that as of now 14 articles have been posted about one game by one site in a 24hr period?

As for "this is a video game website", so is Gamespot, IGN, Destructoid, Joystiq, RockPaperShotgun, PCGamer and GameSpy. Yet they're not covering it obsessively like Kotaku is.

Then quit whining and go read those sites instead.

Frustrated are we? Aren't you whining by complaining about my comment?

I find this all quite amusing personally.

You make a valid point. Though IGN is covering it obsessively, hardly surprising considering they have an advertising deal for Black Ops. Pretty disgusting non the less. Shocking journalistic ethics. I've found that Kotaku are not normally as bad as IGN, who don't seem to give a shit whether anyone notices or not, but that's probably because they're News Corp (Rupert Murdoch).

He's doing it in every story. ignorance is bliss.

        Ignorance of what?

The amount of articles Kotaku is churning out over the game is a fact.

By the way "every story" is not. I've only commented in the last 4 of them because it's getting so ridiculously beyond "coverage" at this point.

I'm curious, would you be able to give brief summaries of each article and what they're covering in BO2?
I'd do it myself but I'm lazy.

Well usually there's this thing on your mouse called a mouse wheel which you can use to scroll down a page quite effortlessly. When you get to the bottom of the page there's a 'Next Page' button.

Why the fuck are you on here if all you do is complain?!?

The butthurt in this article is unbelievable. It's a good joke. Not great and it loses its charm the more you hear it, but it's still funny. I really can't see why you would have such a problem with it.

A lot of guys WILL neglect their girlfriends while they put all their attention into Halo or Black Ops II. And is there really a difference between calling it Black Ops 2 or Black Ops II? I'll give you the No Shave November thing but surely this didn't warrant an article.

14 articles is about 10 too many for a single game in a single day. Regardless of how "important" that game is.

Girlfriend said she going to her parents place for a week on day Black ops 2 got released. She said i know what game is getting released and therefore going away for a week. There's a keeper for you.

More likely teen pregnancy will rise as all the women folk won't be able to resist all the glorious facial hair on display.

I like your ideas... do you have a newsletter which one may subscribe to?

Twitter a hive of scum and villainy? You know 90% of Twitter is people Retweeting, reposting or just sharing jokes and one liners? I don't think anybody has a claim to copywright on a tweet.

    This isn't a new thing.

    That's how memes work.

    And trending topics.

    And innernette humor.

It's not a good thing and it's certainly not a new thing.
