God Of War Was Very Nearly An Accidental Diablo Rip-Off

Kratos' red body paint is about as iconic a wardrobe option as any character we've seen this console generation, but it an interesting reveal over the weekend, former God of War lead David Jaffe has told how this very nearly wasn't the case.

The picture you see above was, according to Jaffe, what Kratos looked like "literally days before we announced the first game to the press". It was only then, at the 11th hour, that a team member saw what Diablo II's Barbarian class looked like, and raised the alarm.

Nobody on the team had spotted or been aware of the similarity between the characters until then, so things had to be changed "lickity fuckin' split!". For the better, too; as silly as Kratos can look dressed in nothing but paint and a permanent scowl, he would have looked even sillier doing a "Braveheart: The Strip Show" routine.

Kratos...as Smurf?!? [David Jaffe]

Thank god. Kratos looks *so* much better with the red stripes...

Looking forward to getting God of War 3 when the PS3 arrives in the next few days.

i saw that on the extras on gow and i thought they changed it because he looked stupid in blue

Been ages since I played the original, so the details are a little hazy... but wasn't the red supposedly the blood of his slaughtered family? Like... he was covered in blood, and then he got covered in ashes, which turned him white except for a few parts where the red still showed through. Or something. Like I said, it's been a while.

He had the tattoo before the ashes turned him white. It was retconned to be something along the lines of his brother Deimos having the same pattern as birthmark, and after Ares took Deimos believing him to be the "Marked Warrior" of prophecy that would kill the gods, Kratos got the tattoo to honor his brother.

So wait, Ares is Kratos' father? I suppose that fits in with the typical Greek mythological soap opera.

It's probably more to do with character design in 95% of games being derivative and bland, especially a decade ago.

Looks like it was supposed to be woad in both cases.

    I like the blue look
