Off Topic: Album Of The Year

This week we're in the process of announcing our games of the year, but as someone who tries to listen to at least a little bit of new music each year, I've also been thinking about my favourite albums of the year. I threw this topic out on Twitter last week, and I was shocked to realise just how much good stuff I missed out on, so I've seriously been playing catch up over the last couple of days. Now I'm really keen to hear all of your thoughts — what have been your favourite albums of 2012?

Here is my final top 5!

1. Young Man In America — Anais Mitchell 2. Visions — Grimes 3. Shrines — Purity Ring 4. Kindred — Burial 5. Life is Good — Nas

A lot of albums really disappointed me this year: I expected great things from the new The XX, Beach House and Animal Collective albums but was a little let down.

Anyway — super keen to hear some of your favourite album picks for 2012, drop them in the comments below!

Candy coated fury- reel big fish
The sound of the life of the mind- Ben folds five
    Provincial - john k samson

Gotta agree here - The Sound of the Life of the Mind- Ben Folds Five is awesome.

I just saw Grimes on the weekend at Meredith Music Festival - it was so great! And then Purity Ring plays Meredith's sister festival Golden Plains in March next year! Perhaps you should move to Victoria, Mark.

Also mine would have to be either Channel Orange - Frank Ocean or Kendrick Lamar's album.

Album of the year hands down for me is crystal castles (iii)
But shrines from purity ring is amazing as is synthetica by metric. All in all a amazing year for music lovers

Special mention to passion pit -gossamer and seth sentry albums because I have flogged them in my car since their releases :P

Agreed on the Crystal Castles, a couple of songs aren't so good but I do love the ethereal tone taken on the album.

    Papa Roach - The Connection
    In This Moment - Blood
    Linkin Park - Living Things
The Amity Affliction - Chasing Ghosts

But I am mostly hanging out for new KARNIVOOL early next year...

Amity brought out a new album? ... any good?

Its really quite okay not as good as young bloods but still solid. :)

It's pretty good, the last track is my personal favourite, check it out!

it shall be done, I haven't really gotten to listen to anything heavy-ish for a while. so it'll be nice to relax on the weekend with

In This Moment have a new album? and it was good? we'll see about that...

Well, it wasn't as good as Star-Crossed Wasteland, it actually only has a few tracks I really like. But I have a total crush on Maria Brink, so, yeah... I'm totally bias :D Lol.

I haven't really gotten to listen to that much music this year ... but I'll go with

    Is - Hey Ocean
Season 2 OST - My Little Pony:Friendship is magic
    HD - Peter Hollens

    I have 2.
For some Aussie metalcore it is Parkway Drive - Atlas. And for some US metalcore it is As I Lay Dying - Awakened. Amazing albums from 2 awesome bands but if you are not a fan of fairly heavy stuff then I doubt either will tickle your fancy.

Havent heard Atlas but have all their older stuff and seen them live couple times, Awakened is good but I prefer bit more of a thrash sound, Sylosis - Monolith, also Gojira - L'Enfant Sauvage

Had not heard of either. Listened to Sylosis and yeah they sound pretty damn good. Not sold on Gojira yet but will have to listen to a bit more before I make up my mind.

Yea Gojira takes a bit to get into, some songs espcially, but there is alway some riff or part of the song that makes it all worth it. check out Oroborus and Esoteric Surgery from 'The Way of All Flesh' and From the Sky and Where Dragons Fall from 'From Mars to Sirius'

"Epicloud" by Devin Townsend was pretty good.

Something For Kates "Give Your Soul to Science", also Flumes debut album is rad.
I've mostly been digging Triple J Unearthed tunes this many great new artists!

such a unique and awesome sound

Something for Kate are still going? Have they made any modifications to that one song they released over and over again back in the 90s?

Actually, their latest album is their freshest sound in ages. you should check it out

Whaaaat!! You cray cray Serrels, Bloom was/is amazing! But great list nonetheless :D

Ahhhh, a rough top 5 must be something like...
Bloom - Beach House (which is amazing and Mark is wrong)
    III - Crystal Castles
    Visions - Grimes
    Shields - Grizzly Bear
    Something - Chairlift

But thats off the top of my head. Other great ones were from Efterklang, Niki & the Dove, Super700, Sleigh Bells (I liked it, no idea why everyone else poo-poos it), The Maccabees, Karin Park. Oh and Kitten did an awesome EP! I will regret forgetting someone later...

    Lamb of God - Resolution
    Turbonegro - Sexual Harrasment
    Linkin Park - Living Things
The Birthday Massacre - Hide and Seek
    Ellie Goulding - Halcyon
Deadmau5 - Album Title Goes Here
Poets of the Fall - Temple of Thought
    Our Lady Peace - Curve
    Katatonia - Dead End Kings

Good list. Similar to my own, if I were bothered ;)

Oh, and your handle is fantastic, but you knew that. SPAGHETT!

Spaghett! Spooked ya! See the cameras?!

Thanks man, this list is awesome, you should have done one of your own

I tried to include a lot of my favourite releases throughout the year, I am sure I forgot a lot of them!

Temple of Thought is best if you disregard The Happy Song as a bonus track, I think.
PotF always seem to make really good album conclusion tracks.

not much at all really... I've been listening to older music all year.

Parkway Drive - Atlas was really strong though

Little bit of a meh year for my tastes.

Soundgarden - King Animal gets my pick. It wasn't amazing, but it was Soundgarden.

It grows on you. I'm a massive fan of anything Chris Cornell does though.

Geess, Gamers really have bad taste in music......

Looks like lists of made up words to me...

    At least someone mentioned Turbonegro....

Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid, Maad City
    Nas - Life Is Good
Blu & Exile - Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them
JJ DOOM - Key To The Kuffs
    Roc Marciano - Reloaded

To be honest, I haven't listened to any new music this year. :S

Well ... at least there's a bit of an eclectic mix for you to go through to see if stuff takes your fancy

Good point! Pretty intimidating, though. :P

    Soundgarden - King Animal
    Motion City Soundtrack - Go

    Erm, let me think.

Transit of Venus - Three Days Grace

Damn.... I thought it'd be easy to have a top 5 list, but everything I've been listening to on high rotation this year is old...

    anyway... top 2:

Future of the Left - The Plot Against Common Sense
    Run Squirrel - Sex Musk

    Beach House
    Solange (EP)

Converge - All We Love We Leave Behind
    Turbonegro - Sexual Harassment
    The Sword - Apocryphon
High On Fire - De Vermis Mysteriis
Enabler - All Hail The Void

    Biggest letdown
    Baroness - Yellow and Green

      Agree with Baroness.
For a double album I only listen to a handful of tracks on the first album.

Converge was great - if you like them give Code Orange Kids a go.

      Top 10
      The Chariot - One Wing
      mewithoutYou - Ten Stories
      Circa Survive - Violent Waves
      The Gaslight Anthem - Handwritten
The Ghost Inside - Get What You Give
Converge - All We Love We Leave Behind
      Parkway Drive - Atlas
Make Do and Mend - Everything You Ever Loved
Coheed & Cambria - The Afterman: Ascenion
      Gallows - Self Titled

Stone Sour - House of Gold and Bones Part 1

    An absolutely killer album!!!

My top album of the year is Frank Ocean's channel ORANGE. so chilled and relaxing. great honest lyrics too.
runner-up would be either Tame Impala- Lonerism or Alt-J's- An Awesome Wave

A lot of great stuff already mentioned here.
I'll throw in Hermitude - HyperParadise

I'm not sure I've even heard any songs from this year at all. All I listen to is the same old things on my flash drive in my car, and all of it is old.

Only music related thing from the year gone by that I have any thoughts on is the biggest musical disappointment of the year - the lack of an Australian leg of Judas Priest's Epitaph tour.
