Square Enix Will Bring Final Fantasy V And More To iOS

At the end of this trailer for Final Fantasy IV — which is out today on iOSfor the Square Enix-ish price of $16.99 — there’s a Very Special Teaser. Final Fantasy V! And more!

This is very cool, especially if they keep going through the years. While the first four Final Fantasy games have already been re-released seven thousand times each, I’d love to pick up some of the later Final Fantasys — like VI and IX — to play on my iPad. Of course, Final Fantasy V is the only confirmed entry right now, but that “and more” is alluring.

As for FFIV, well, I haven’t tried the iOS version yet, and I don’t know if I will, since I have to spend the next few weeks catching up on a whole bunch of GAME OF THE YEAR considerations. But it’s a port of the 3D DS version, complete with a brand new uglyass font.

Also worth noting: Square’s got a giant mobile sale going right now on more games than I can list here, but some of the prices are actually rather reasonable. $9.49 for Final Fantasy Tactics is a must-buy.

  • Isn’t FFV the only FF game that hasn’t been remade? When are they going to fix that, it’s one of my favourite FF games.

    • FFV and FFVI are the only two 8/16 bit, main series FF’s to not have proper remakes. Both have GBA ports, which added some extra content, but both ports kept the games very similar to the originals in terms of graphics and sound.

      • There was a PSX/PSOne release of FFVI that added CG cutscenes and a Bestiary as well as some other features.

    • It would be a waste. The 3D version of 4 looks worse than the sprite version. if they make them blocky big heads for FFV as and VI as well they would also be worse than the originals.

Is there something wrong with sprites? I have the GBA FFV and enjoy it a lot more than in that graphical style than the 3D updated games.

Fighting games still look better with sprites than 3D these days – some things shouldn’t change

  • Cool, but my entire attitude towards Square Enix and iOS can be summed up with three words.

    Universal. Apps. Motherf***ers.
