Free Radical co-founder Steve Ellis raised some eyebrows last week when he said that the mythical Star Wars: Battlefront III, the dead game that just will not die, was “99 per cent done” at his studio when publishers pulled the plug.

It was a weird thing to say, since surely things like quality assurance and other testing account for a lot more than 1 per cent of a game’s development, something a former Lucasarts developer speaking with GameSpot agrees with. Sort of. Before launching into a bit of a tirade.

“This 99 per cent complete stuff is just bulls**t,” the sadly anonymous staffer said. “A generous estimate would be 75 per cent of a mediocre game.”

This source then goes on to make a lot of accusations against Free Radical, which Ellis later addresses, but that’s tit-for-tat stuff that’s almost impossible to get to the bottom of. Instead, I’d say we all just dwell on those words from the anonymous staffer, and remember that more often than not, a game goes unreleased for a reason.

Former LucasArts employee on why Star Wars: Battlefront III failed [GameSpot]

  • “A generous estimate would be 75 per cent of a mediocre game.” From the game play videos we saw this sounds very accurate. Game looked very bad. Admittedly we have no idea when the game play footage was taken during the whole process.

  • There were two versions. One for PS3/360/PC that was cancelled, and one for PS2/PSP/DS that had worse graphics and wasn’t cancelled, but renamed Rogue Squadron.

  • I agree, as much as we’d like a new Battlefront, looking closely at what little footage we have and also playing through the PSP Renegade Squadren (which actually is BFIII rebranded), you can tell right off the the bat that it would’ve been very mediocre.

The game just screams of BF I/II in HD, with the same bad animations and ill-thought through mechanics that would’ve been eclipsed by other titles released over the last 3-4 years. Still Star Wars can sometimes be enough to make it an enjoyable title.

  • Can we please stop talking about SWBF3… It makes me cry over and over and over hearing it will never come to pass

*grabs the tissue box fuck you kotaku :'(
