Female characters wearing large headphones is a trope in Japanese anime. The headphones make the characters’ heads look smaller, thus, by anime standards, appear “cuter”. Tropes aside, the headphones are often based on real products. But which ones?

In the past few years, on anime sites, music sites and anime music sites, audiophiles and casual listeners alike have been trying to nail down the real world versions of the various headphones they spot.

That’s why on Japanese forum 2ch, net users marvelled out how a “foreigner” worked hard to compile a detailed list of the actual types of headphones that appeared in various anime and video games. (The 2ch thread didn’t cite the source, so if you know which thread this image originally appeared on, let us know so we can credit.)

Check out the real world versions in the gallery above — also check out how expensive they are. Manaka Takane from Konami’s Love Plus love simulator is sporting Sennheiser headphones that cost well over a thousand bucks.

    • Three don’t yes. But three include boobs/scantily clad cartoon women, I guess some would see that as an alright trade off.

    • Maybe those three images are included as they are more recognisable as the girls from Love Plus in those shots compared to their corresponding headphone pictures adjacent… if that makes sense?

    • I think you can get them for closer to a grand at some places. I hear they are truly otherworldly though. Only a few other pairs compete. (look for discussion at headphones.com.au I can cite my information, sort of…)

      • Sennheiser seems to control pricing with an iron fisted grip. I also felt that their HD650s for number years were overpriced as in they went up in price by a heap and stayed that way for years. Like 499 back in 2007 to up and over 700.

I stopped paying attention to Sennheiser. I went with their competitors flagship item. Beyerdynamic T1. Which can definitely be had for cheaper.

While I disagree with the trend to ever more expensive flagship headphones. (2k for LCD-3…keep gluing those ear pads on because that is clearly acceptable design /sarcasm). Heaphones are like sports superbikes of Audio. Anyone can own a superbike for family car money, few can afford a sports car.
