DayZ Stand-Alone Release Rescheduled, 'Closed Testing' To Begin Soon

The folks behind DayZ say they want to rebuild the game's whole engine before releasing a stand-alone version.

Writing in a blog post published this morning, DayZ creator Dean Hall says he's delayed a stand-alone release of the Arma 2 mod — which was originally slated to be turned into a stand-alone game by the end of 2012 — in order to revamp the whole thing:

Put simply, DayZ Standalone isn't here because we had the chance to go from making a game that was just the mod improved slightly, packaged simply, and sold - to actually redeveloping the engine and making the game the way we all dreamed it could be. This blew any initial plans we had dictated to pieces.

The plan from here is straightforward. We will be releasing a closed test imminently, during which approximately 500-1000 people will assist in ensuring our architecture is correctly functioning. This closed test will be focused purely on architecture, not the game design. Once we have confirmed fixes for issues arising from the closed test, we will then reschedule an internal date for our public release.

Improvements in the stand-alone version of DayZ will include a new inventory and item scavenging system, a simpler interface and new art, Hall writes. No ETA yet.

Awesome, and hopefully the new engine will be less resource hungry.

Really? I've never ever had a problem running Arma 2 and DayZ at all? Alt tabbing out, running itunes or winamp at the same time, often running a video on a 2nd monitor or dayzdb maps, etc... Im running a 460 gt se, 8gb ram, i5 3.0 quad core from memory, solid state drive for the OS and steam runs off a plate drive 500gb drive. What do you run? I've never ever had issues with low memory, framerate or resource hogging...

i have to agree, i find it easy im even on a low end computer and i can run it on medium with win amp and other programs fine.

I'm on medium, just it's seriously ugly and I want to see a new engine making it easier to run. I can run GW2 at full but the ARMA engine is a bitch.

Is it possible to sign up for the testing?

He stated (rocket) that access would be given to reddit moderators and key members of the community (youtubers like sacriel)

Sounding good, like the idea of DayZ but the current execution doesn't appeal to me - a standalone developed-for-purpose game, now they're talking my language

The initial way paved the way for this. A free mod. Buying Arma 2 allowed you to play, sure but it was at least a full game you could play without DayZ and a damn good one too. Now thanks to that, you have this. I'll be supporting this from the ground up, buying 2 copies and gifting one to a friend for sure to ensure more people play!

I hope they make it so at night, its not just pitch black, you can actually see around you.

Yeah currently I am bored with games that are out - Dayz was the only game in recent times that I have been wanting to play. I loved the mod but in the end the glitches made me stay away.

    DayZ making tip*....DON'T - PUT - IN - THAT - 4 - HOUR - WAIT - BULLSHIT!

4 hour wait? ..oh, WarZ reference I guess, don't be absurd.

Still a better love story than WarZ.

Just so you guys and gals know..not only the bigger names got access to the Foundation test, a lot of standard gamers did too, i'm one of them :) and i stream nothing , no youtube channel and i am not internet famous , so its good that a lot of little fish (hardcore gamers still though) will be swimming with the so called big fish.

    cheers :)
