More Hope For Final Fantasy Versus XIII?

More Hope For Final Fantasy Versus XIII?

Back in 2006, Square Enix unveiled three games: Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Agito XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII. All three were linked by mythos centred on crystals and the series was dubbed “Fabula Nova Crystallis”.

And somewhere along the way to 2013, Final Fantasy Agito XIII was renamed Final Fantasy Type-0, while Final Fantasy XIII launched two sequels, Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.

When asked about the end of this universe, longtime Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase told game site IGN, “When you say this universe, if you’re talking about the universe that we have been seeing in XIII, XIII-2 and this game, that includes Cocoon, Gran Pulse and the islands in this installment; that is definitely coming to an end. But if you’re on about Fabula Nova Crystallis and the mythology that these stories are based on, that may continue.”

The “that may continue” line is causing some in Japan to speculate on the future of the long overdue Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Does this mean…? Could it mean…? Stuff like that.

Kitase did say that games based on the mythology “may continue”. And maybe they will! Last winter, Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada said developers were “diligently making Final Fantasy Versus XIII,” but added, “When it gets to the stage that it makes one think, ‘This is Final Fantasy,’ we’d like to show it to everyone.”

OK. Fine. But if Square Enix does release Versus, it would be somewhat surprising for the game to keep the Final Fantasy XIII moniker, no? Especially with universe of XIII, XIII-2, and Lightning Returns coming to an end.

With rumours swirling about Sony’s inevitable PlayStation 4 reveal, Square Enix better get Versus out in a fairly timely fashion if it wants to make this generation. Or, with the way things have been going, next generation.

Lightning Returns Isn’t The End of Fabula Nova Crystallis [IGN]

  • It would be pretty sad for a game that went into development at the start of the generation to completely miss it…

I honestly think there’s no good way out of using the XIII name for this game. It seems to share quite a bit with the rest of the XIII games with mention of Etro among other things so if this did become XV that just wouldn’t make sense or if it dropped the number all completely it just wouldn’t be right for a game of this scale.

  • Given their recent track record, even if Versus is released in some form (which seems to be a big if) it’ll most likely be far from stellar. No game can have a development time this long and prove to be worth the wait.

    • But but but Duke Nukem Forever!!!!

I kid I kid. Seriously, you’re right. Even TF2, which was in production for what, 7 or 8 years? Scrapped EVERYTHING at one point, dumped it all, and started from scratch again, turning from a full on military TF to what we know and love today as the cartoon game. This FF game is quickly becoming a joke.

      • But but but Last Guardian!

But yeah, while that’s most likely true, didn’t they almost do the same thing with this game as well? I swear I remember reading about a year ago that they took a massive direction change due to the criticisms of FF XIII in a effort to make it slightly more open and similar to older FF titles. Or some such…

  • I suspect they’d release for PS3 even if PS4 is out, because the PS3 install base is pretty huge now. That’d change if it was in development for another two years or something though.

Also my understanding is that it was never intended for the game to sit around for so long, but a lot of developers got pulled off Versus to work on the reboot of FFXIV. That’s getting toward being done now so maybe there’s hope again.

  • I think it will turn up.
Just a thought but Twilight Princess was both a GameCube and Wii release at the end of ones life and the beginning of anothers.
Maybe a full on 1080p version will be a launch game for PS4 and a 720p version for PS3. If that is the case then the silence would be because the PS4 is not announced and Sony and SE are both going to announce it as part of the PS4 announcement.
Only a theory but as the Zelda example shows it is entirely possible.

  • I’m hoping this game gets made soon, because the team behind it are responsible for Kingdom Hearts 3 coming out. Right now it’s seeming that KH3 will release about the same time as Half Life 3…
