The Alien From Aliens Was Originally Chinese, Alleges Flea Market Art Find

Swiss surrealist artist H. R. Giger is credited with designing the Alien (née Xenomorph) from the iconic movies and games.

The character appeared in a 1976 work by Giger. But could it be actually much older than that?

That's what one internet user named Zhao is claiming in China. This painting, Zhao blogs, was allegedly discovered at a Beijing flea market and is believed to be the work of influential Chinese artist Qi Baishi.

Perhaps because China is often accused of stealing intellectual property, a cottage industry has sprouted up, with folks in China saying Western inventions are Chinese knockoffs (take this Men in Black 3 claim). Then, there's the bit about people making crap up on the internet.

Baishi died in 1957, and if this is indeed his work, that would mean his "alien" was created well before Giger's painting Necronom IV (below) was completed.

Zhao's original post on Chinese microblogging site Weibo was uploaded in late December, and it now has well over six thousand comments. Some say that the alleged Baishi work was the uncredited source for the Xenomorph design. Others in China say this is a hoax. And then there are those who just want to believe.

But is this art even real? Biashi was noted for his fine brushwork, but much of his work focuses on flowers, insects, animals and sea creatures like shrimp.

Even China's National Museum has chimed in on the controversy via its microblogging site. And while the National Museum is being coy and didn't verify (or deny) the work, it did offer, "The mixing of water colours and science fiction is truly a sight to behold."

100% Fake. They don't look at all phallic.

Exactly what I was thinking. Probably some Chinese fan of the series made it and sold it at the flea market or something.

Yeah, right....I feel confident that this is a hoax

Hoax, look at the arms, they look like the queen alien from the 1986 film.

The fact that they look ridiculously simillar to the James Cameron version of the Aliens rather than the original HR Giger concept makes me certain that this is fake. I'd still have it on my wall though!

Could go to a local market pretty much anywhere that has Chinese community and there would be a painter who would be happy to produce that picture for $100 or so.

Really nice work. And who can say for sure if it's fake or not?

    I certainly can't.

The Chinese are always trying to ripp others IP off because they cant think of anything themselves. whats new.

Maybe you are right they invented all the important stuff 1000s of years ago. Like gunpowder, the compass, paper, printing, coffins, rice cultivation, noodles (where would we be without our 2 minute noodles) and don't forget fireworks, toilet paper and the list goes on.

I agree with 90% of your analysis... but i'm pretty sure the ancient Egyptians invented paper

The Egyptians created the written surface, papyrus, but the Chinese invented the pulp paper making process and paper akin to what we have today. So technically the Chinese did invent 'paper from a certain point of view. .

Every work is inspired, subconsciously or not.

Oh, it's real. But most certainly made long after 1986. This claim is grade A horsesh*t-- well, it's a Chinese knock off, so more likely badly copied horsesh*t.

I'd say fake - but damnnnn does it ever look amazing?! Sooo nice! :D

Hahahah, ah, the Chinese make me laugh so hard. Next they'll say they invented Basketball and then North Korea and them will have a war over it. (Hint: Kim Jong Il claimed that he created Basketball).

It sucks balls in a way though because instead of being proud of my part Chinese background, all the crap they're doing is just making me say that I'm Mongolian instead.

Well the Chinese did invent a lot of important stuff that has got us where we are today. Check it out sometime, you might be proud of your heritage again. I give them an A+ on the invention test. Oh and they did invent football (soccer).

If it's from China you can bet this is probably 99.8% knockoff lol.

I also do not think Giger has ever been to China. He used to be very closed-off to the world up there in his cabin in Chur. Only when the directors of Alien approached him did he get an enormous fame boost, and even then he still would hardly ever do interviews or come out of his hidey hole.

Anyhow love the painting the Chinese came up with :). If I saw that at a flea-market
    I'd defo buy it haha!

Seriously? I was sort of expecting that looks roughly, with what could be said as natural progression before it looks like the Aliens we know today, but no... it looks like direct copies.

    Looks nice though.

    Here's a link to the guy's work:

Landscapes, trees and flowers, and cute little birds.

Highly unlikely he also did "freaky aliens" and that Giger saw it and ripped it off so closely and no-one else has mentioned it in the past 40+ years.

That said, this watercolour looks friggin' amazing and I'd buy it in a second.

The last pictures head looks like a giant wang
