The Most Scintillating Cover Of Skyward Sword's Ballad Of The Goddess, Ever

Laura Shigihara? Yeah, she's excellent. The singer, songwriter and composer behind the Plants vs. Zombies soundtrack and a few other catchy, game-related tunes once again amazes with this startling rendition of "Ballad of the Goddess" from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

To begin with, I found the contrast odd between the whispering echo added to Shigihara's vocals and the fairly mundane visual set up (a person sitting in a room recording themselves on a webcam), but it quickly becomes irrelevant as the keyboard kicks in, the voices start layering and well, the awesomeness goes into overdrive.

Honestly? I'm being pedantic. It could have been two-and-a-half minutes of completely darkness — the vocals are that good. Let me put it another way: If the hairs on the back of your neck don't stand to attention, then you must be dead inside.

That, or your speakers are turned off.

Amazingly beautfiul yeah but I must be one of those dead people.. Spose it would help if you knew the original which I did not. Also have never actually heard of her.

This is great! But I didn't realise there were lyrics in the original. Did she make up her own lyrics? Anyone know what she's singing?

Slightly related - anyone here going to watch Symphony of the Goddess at the Sydney Opera House next weekend?

Hell yes! seat No. 10, for me. Bought them weeks ago, and I'm so damn excited.

Yep, I'll be there! flying up from Melbourne for it, cannot wait... I may actually cry hearing the songs that I've grown up too...

The lyrics are sung by Zelda, and translate out to whatever it is that Gaepora tells you they are(helpful, I know).

      Also, it's sung in Hylian.

Actually, a Link might help with this.

Oh yes that's right, it's been a while since I played the game, and I've just been listening to the instrumental piece that was on the CD. Thanks =)

I'll be there on the Saturday afternoon concert! Can't wait!
That was a cool arrangement, but nothing can beat FreddeGredde's Wind Waker song. I could listen to that all day!

"If the hairs on the back of your neck don’t stand to attention...."

    They did, actually!

Don't forget she also wrote the theme song for To The Moon

Chilling in a good way. Loved it. Wish I was going to the Symphony of the Goddess T_T

Sounds great. Though honestly I think the auto tune and compression are a bit over done. Takes all of the warmth out and makes her sound almost like a voice synth. Picky I know, but eh.

As a sound engineer, I'm not hearing any autotune on this whatsoever. Not only because I sit at a computer all day editing vocal tracks and it's 2nd nature to me when something has even subtle amounts of autotune or melodyne on it... but also because she has plenty of live singing stuff out there where she sounds just as good.

As for effects, the only thing she seems to be using is reverb, which is entirely appropriate for this type of song. In reality, her voice actually sounds much more warm and natural than the original (which *is* a synthesized voice). It's too bad Nintendo didn't use this track in the actual game, I think it turned out beautifully.

Not going to argue about auto tune. You sound more qualified than me. However, there is little to no dynamic range in the vocals. Whatever is happening, it all sounds a bit 'flat' (not tonally but dynamically).
