White House Responds To Death Star Petition: 'The Administration Does Not Support Blowing Up Planets'

The White House has turned down a popular petition to begin construction on a Death Star in fairly hilarious fashion.

"The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defence, but a Death Star isn't on the horizon," writes Paul Shawcross, chief of the Science and Space Branch at the White House Office of Management and Budget, in a response titled "This Isn't the Petition Response You're Looking For."

Among the reasons listed are the estimated $US850,000,000,000,000,000 cost ("We're working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it"), and the known Death Star vulnerability ("Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?"). Perhaps most crucially, Shawcross points out that "The Administration does not support blowing up planets."

He goes on to highlight the impressive space vessels and stations that already do exist, urging petitioners to consider a career in science, technology, engineering or maths. (Hmm, notice the order he put those in?)

"If you do pursue a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field," Shawcross writes, "the Force will be with us! Remember, the Death Star's power to destroy a planet, or even a whole star system, is insignificant next to the power of the Force."

    Well played, White House.

No, but they'll invade the **** out of them if they've got oil... ;)

Better the US having their oil. Civilians of these 'nutter' planets will just end up killing eachother anyway...

They never reply to serious letters from concerned people. Has to be to crap like this.
Well as long as they look trendy, that's all that matters.
And if they had the tech they'd be blowing up planets already via weapons testing.

They officially promised to respond to petitions that reached a threshold of signatures.

      Kotaku US is over there.

I'm sure you would feel right at home over there with an opinion like that, considering the majority of the comments on this article over there sounded like this.

‘The Administration Does Not Support Blowing Up Planets’ HOLY SHIT, that means there making one right now!!!!!!!

The Republicans will support it. Just tell them Venus are making weapons of mass destruction

Well played White House. Well played.

Awesome. We may not be getting IRL Star Wars action any time soon, but thanks to the DEKA arm (linked in his reply), at least we're getting those cool augmentations from Deus Ex!

Just as well; if they made it, all the supporters of the Second Amendment (Right to Bear Arms) would want to buy one.

I love their response and how Mr. (Dr. or Prof.?) Shawcross replied rather seriously (as in he didn't give a form response and actually seems to have read the petition) yet in a tongue-in-cheek manner. Hopefully that petition brightened up their day as much as the response has for many people.
