Blizzard Is Hosting A Starcraft II: Heart Of The Swarm Launch Party At Federation Square

The launch of Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm is a big deal so, as you might expect, Blizzard is making a big deal of it. On March 11, one day before the launch of the expansion pack, Blizzard is hosting a massive launch party at Federation Square featuring live matches between top Australian Starcraft professionals.

What else? The event will also feature a live developer panel featuring the game's Director, Dustin Browder who will be in attendance at Melbourne. The super talented 'Mr Jack', the Starcraft 3D artist known in real life as Luke Mancini, will also be doing some digital speed painting.

What else? Geeze you folks are hard to please! There will be a cosplay contest, music videos by Viva La Dirt League and a bunch of competitions throughout the night. The event is also being co-run by EB Games which means you'll be able to pick up a copy of the game when the clock strikes midnight — since the game is set for release March 12.

"The StarCraft community has been anticipating Heart of the Swarm for a long time," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "I believe you will find it was worth the wait. We’re looking forward to celebrating the release by hosting an awesome global launch party in two weeks and delivering our best StarCraft content to date."

I believe it was 'some guy' who said, 'ain't no part like a Starcraft party'. This sounds like a pretty stellar night to me. Have at it my Melbourne brethren.

I remember going to my local EB Games midnight launch for SC2 it was horrible, we had a SC1 tournament where we were told their were no prizes so I didn't put much effort into it and for some reason they gave the winner a $300 WoW headset I felt majorly trolled and when I woke up the next morning I had bronchitis which lasted a week.

I believe it was ‘some guy’ who said, ‘ain’t no part like a Starcraft party’.

That 'some guy' was almost definitely Day9.

I really hope that someone cosplays as destructible rocks, if Browder is anywhere near the judging panel it would be an instant victory.

Dress up as collapsible rocks, then trip over and instantly become destructible rocks. It's like two costumes in one, taking 1st and 2nd place.

You should check if Blizzard is hiring, they might need people like you for Legacy of the Void.

That's labour day in Melbourne... If I didn't have the day off I'd probably go in (I work 10 minutes away)

Also, midnight release for Blizzard games are pointless, they don't unlock until 5pm.

I specifically remember SC2 unlocking at 12pm for the Oceanic servers, perhaps that was just a one time Diablo 3 thing?

WoW expansions also have the US unlock, but yeah, since we'd presumably be on the Oceanic server, a midnight unlock seems entirely possible.

The problem, most hardcore SC MP players perfer the NA servers due to the better response times.

What does that have to do with anything? just play on Oceanic servers until 5pm than switch to NA Servers, we are only debating the usefulness of a Australian midnight launch event here.

Arnt they amalgamating the servers for this xpac ?

              No clue, are they?

I don't think they're merging them, but what they're doing is no longer having seperate copies... You can buy a copy in the EU, and you can choose EU, NA or SEA. Previously SEA copies had the ability to switch to NA shortly after launch.

Part of the problem you describe above distantdrop, it's all well and good to switch to NA at 5pm, but any progress made (either on ladder or campaign) on SEA before then is not carried over... So if you want to get straight into NA and not piss fart around, the game opens at 5pm.

At least they'll have the city to themselves. I'd expect it to be fairly dead on a Monday public holiday.

Moomba is on..... so no, it will be very very not dead....... [well, at least any part of town near the river ;-) ]

The rest of the city will be allll miiiiinnneeee! >:-D

Near the river, like fed square. Bloody hell, that seems like a bit of a clash.

Gah, why must they do it just before a work day!

Damn why the public holiday! Anyone know what time it starts?
