Evo 2013 Raises Over $110,000 For Breast Cancer Research

This idea is genius! The grandaddy of competitive fighting Evo recently announced its game line up for its upcoming 2013 tournament set for July. Normally eight games are chosen, but this year the team decided to let the community choose the eighth game by letting gamers put their money where their mouth is. They asked the community to donate money towards the game they’d most like to see at Evo 2013. The game that received the most cash would be represented at the tournament. The end result? Well over $110,000 raised for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and an old classic returning to the tournament circuit.

The seven games initially chosen were Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Mortal Kombat 9, Street Fighter X Tekken 2013, King of Fighters XIII and Persona 4 Arena — which left the fighting game community with a huge number of other games to choose from…

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core +R
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
SFIII Third Strike, Online Edition
Virtua Fighter 5
Divekick
Melty Blood Actress Again Current
MLP: Fighting is Magic
Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale
Dead or Alive 5
Capcom vs. SNK 2
Injustice
Skullgirls
Street Fighter II Super Turbo
Blazblue
Soul Calibur V
Darkstalkers 3

That was the ponderous list of games the community could donate towards, and donate they did. It was remarkably tight over the top three. Skullgirls managed to rack up $30,022.50, whilst Super Street Fighter II Turbo collected an incredible $36,710.93. Personally, I would have loved to see that take the additional slot.

But that slot ultimately went to Super Smash Bros. Melee. Fans of that old competitive stalwart donated in droves, resulting in a total of $37,963.20 going to breast cancer research.

In total the initiative raised $116,468.64 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which is just incredible. Well done to everyone involved.
