Finally, A Game For The Crazy Cat Lady In All Of Us

You're on the internet, so you must love cats. It's the law. Although, even if you don't love cats with the obsessive fixation of a crazy cat lady, perhaps there's still something for you in Team Meat's upcoming Mew-Genics? I mean, it's Pokemon meets Animal Crossing plus a pinch of Tamagotchi and a dash of The Sims. With cats!

The Super Meat Boy developer Edmund McMillen has been teasing Mew-Genics for weeks now, but it wasn't until this weekend that he finally pulled the curtain back on his latest game. Apparently, it's the most complex game he's ever made.

So what Mew-Genics does is, it puts you in a "simulated 'cat lady' environment. Beyond that? It's difficult to pinpoint exactly what the game lets you do, though McMillen gives a story in his latest blog post about trying to breed different cats. It sounds pretty crazy. He writes:

Last week I was playing a game with Puddle, a fat female cat I had been working on earlier that day, I thawed her out of her Cryo-cube and placed her in my current single story house along with her newly generated companion Champ. I had been focusing my time on Puddle due to the fact that she seemed to have a very unique tail that I believe had helped her place 2nd in a cat pageant in a previous and I needed to breed her so I could continue her bloodline before she got too old. Sadly Champ wasn't up to snuff and Puddle made this obvious by repeatedly kicking him in the face, I separated them quickly by putting champ in the attic but when I tried to feed him.. something odd happened. See, Champ was a dullard and when Puddle kicked him he just happened to also be eating and now associated the trauma with food instead of Puddle herself, he was scared of all food.. and sadly died in the attic shortly after.

He goes on to describe catching a stray cat, getting his cat pregnant, only to find out the stray cat is a narcoleptic and so his new kitten offspring are, too. The stray cat runs away, the kittens don't win any pageants (too busy sleeping), and the mum cat ends up with feline aids.

But there's no treatment, so McMillen cryogenically freezes the cat in the hopes that there's a cure for her disease in the future. And then to cap all THAT off, he's arrested in-game because of his cat care, but it could be the pet running away, the dead cat in the attic, or a bunch of other things. Too many variables to take into consideration, it seems.

This story, plus the insane number of randomised elements in The Binding of Isaac make me think that Mew-Genics has a lot of storytelling potential. Even just considering the cats — there are 25418658283290000000000000 possibilities and that number is only growing... and it's not counting "their kitten states, sizes, animation sets, stats, personality, etc".

There's no official release date yet, but McMillen says the game is coming to Steam, iOS and Android. We'll keep you updated.

This game sounds like a simulator for my mother-in-law's house.

"He goes on to describe catching a stray cat, getting his cat pregnant..."

Even with our shiny new R rating for games, I'm not sure if this is going to get through...

If there's that many unique cats, and the whole game is greyscale.... doesn't that defeat the purpose a bit?

Mmm. I'm not sold on the graphical style.

Nope, because a true crazy cat person can tell the difference between two cats by the way they act. Two neighbourhood cats that keep coming past are very similar, but can be told apart by where they sleep and how they react to outside noises.

Wait...how do you have time to play games when you are trolling the internet for minor issues and blowing them completely out of proportion?

So Ms Hernadez has not written an article condemning this game? It is making fun of animal hoarding and mental illness!! I am sure both the rspca and peta would be up in paws about this travesty!!! I implore you Ms Hernadez to stand up for these poor kittens! I call for you to immediately investigate whether the street cat sex was consensual! I further ask for you to establish whether this game is cruelly taunting WOMEN with dementia! Please Ms Hernadez help save the pussy cats!

And further it is perpetuating an old archaic and incorrect stereotype of women!

THE HORROR!!!!! The sexist misogynistic judgmental horror :O

She doesn't need to since you seem to be doing it for her.

Man, you guys (And I do mean guys here) seem to be really threatened by having someone around willing to talk about how BS the industry's treatment of people (Especially female people) are. She must be doing something right to have this level of bile from you!

Keep on trucking, Patricia, a lot of us quietly love your articles and are glad you are here.

Well actually I have previously been employed by two universities. In both these jobs I worked with the on campus woman's group as part of my job description. One of these groups actually held Nowsa whilst I worked there. Further I have two degrees. One of these is a text/writing/ philosophy degree with a strand in feminist literature. My satire was directed at Ms Hernadez with good reason http://www.kotaku.com.au/2013/02/what-happens-when-you-accuse-someone-of-attempting-date-rape-in-guild-wars-2/.
So rather than blindly defending her often rash presumptions and assuming that we are all men and stupid perhaps you could actually explain why and how her sometimes ignorant style of journalism actually benefits others?

Further bringing up the presumed sex of us - as commentators - is both sexist and offensive. Are you a misandrist? It is uneducated and misinformed commentary and personal attack (such as yours) that prevents others (regardless of their gender) from commenting on important issues. I hope you think about what you just did and eat some hypocritical pie.

I actually really like the sound of this, sounds addictive

I find it amusing that Patricia posts something about crazy cat ladies.
