It’s Not Every Day A Free Mobile Game Launches With A $100 Licensed Headset

Real Racing 3 launches in North America tomorrow, and fans won’t need to drop a single red cent on the third instalment of Firemonkeys’ console-quality racer if they don’t want to. That’ll free them up to spend $US100 on the special Real Racing 3 edition of SteelSeries Flux headset.

I can’t recall another mobile game release that was accompanied by pricey peripherals, so excuse me while I roll around in the novelty of it all. EA’s high hopes for the first free-to-play, microtransaction-heavy entry in the Real Racing franchise are reflected in this headset’s shiny custom ear plates.

The Flux is a lovely headset — I said as much when I handled it during the Guild Wars 2 launch. It’s also highly customisable, so all SteelSeries and EA had to do here is slap on a fresh pair of decals and call it a day. The engines of your rides in the Android or iOS version of the game will sound lovely, and you’ll have proven your loyalty to the Real Racing brand. Surely someone out there has that much loyalty.

The Real Racing 3 Flux Headset is available now for $US99.99.

  • I think it is very misleading to call the game ‘free’. While it is certainly free to install; it is most defiantly not free to play. It is classified as a ‘freemium’ or pay-to-play game, because that’s what it rightly is. I’ve been playing it for quite a while; and while technically is does not force you to pay; it uses a really quite admirable manipulation stratagy which ensures that a large number of people Will spend money on it.
The model would not have become popular if it did not make money; but I cannot help but think it has ruined the Real games. There are now almost no racing games that are not freemium, and the majority of mobile games have become this way.
With publishers like EA putting these microtransactions into $80+ games; I cannot help but feel worried about the state of the industry for the future.

Sorry. Went on a tangent there.
    Cool headphones.
