Realistic Pokémon Starters Are Way Cooler Than The Ones In The Games

I've accepted that we'll probably never see something particularly realistic when it comes to Pokémon designs. Nintendo is all about the cartoony looks that aren't graphically intensive. But sometimes, when I look at artistic renditions of Pokémon — like these ones by Sam Yang over at CGHub — I can't help but think of what-could-have-been.

The one above is a wallpaper of all three original starter Pokémon (Charizard, Venusaur, and Blastoise), from Red/Blue. Below, you can see the individual renditions. Click for full size.

You can see the rest of Sam's creations on CGHub here.

Realistic? Maybe it's just me but these look like something from Rob Liefeld...Especially Charizard :(

That dragon has anatomy closer to a human than Rob liefeld's humans have.

These are pretty interesting, but if we're talking realistic...

      Those are actually really awesome
      Except Mewtwo, that's terrifying :P

Ha, but the hands and feet are way too large for Rob Liefeld.

That blastoise sucks, the other 2 aren't bad

The Blastoise looks like one o those little guys from Halo

The Blastoise looks awful and the Charizard looks... well I don't even know what word to use. The Venosaur looks great though

That is clearly digitoise, not blastoise.

Drunken drawing aside, can we all agree to stop calling this realistic? It's cool, don't get me wrong, but it's more of a hyper detailed horror theme than a 'real' theme. Venasuar, as cool as it is, looks like a frog with spikes and a some weird venus flytrap in its back, not an old dinosaur with a giant flower. Cute pokemon drawn in a way that makes them scary is not realistic.
