There’s A Playable, If Broken Build Of An Unreleased Resident Evil Game Out There

One of the more famous unfinished games on the PlayStation is Resident Evil 1.5, a title that was originally intended to be Resident Evil 2 before it was scrapped at the 11th hour and replaced with, well, Resident Evil 2.

The title’s unfinished and mysterious nature has led it to develop a bit of a cult following, and for a little while now a team of fans has – having obtained code of the projcet – been working to restore as much as they could and release a playable build to the public.

Well, after some messy internal politics and alleged hacks, the team has gone out ahead of schedule and, rather than wait to release a “finished” build (including English translations), put out a work-in-progress, which you can download and try out.

Be warned: it’s an “unstable mess” that is “in no way representative of the current state” of the actual project that’ll be released down the line, but hey, if you can’t wait for a more polished experience, one it’s hoped you’ll be able to play on actual PS1 hardware, you can get in on some hidden gaming history below.

Resident Evil 1.5 [The Horror, via NeoGAF, thanks Dennis!]

  • Probably for the best. For me, RE2 remains the high point of the series to this day, and was the game that managed to lure me from PC to console – the game that sold me a PlayStation. I’m glad they ditched this and went with RE2 in its eventual form.

    • I really like Resident Evil 4 and 5 for what they are, but Resident Evil 2 has got to be the definitive Resident Evil game for me. This RE1.5 is interesting, but like the sequel to Star Wars we’re a lot better off with what we got.

    • Same here, was very impressed with 4 but so far nothing can beat 2 for me. Also clever how they do the switcheroo with the storyline 🙂

  • More Rsi 2 is only a good thing! So good.
I remember the original concept was Elsa Walker (Claire before she was Claire) trying to break in while Leon (with a crewcut) was trying to break out of the police station.

  • Sadly this version that’s out there has been modified and isn’t the exact original vanilla version (which is the 40%) Due to the team messing with the code, heaps of glitches and bugs have come up compared to the untouched 40% build out of Capcom which includes:

    – Cannot jump down or up ledges
    – Game crashes with altered cutscenes
    – Custom skins for Marvin/Roy
    – 3F, B1 corridor and Power room are fan made rooms.

And of course, the translation text you see in cutscenes doesn’t represent the original in Jap.
