After All These Years, The Legend Of Zelda Now Stars Zelda

This is one of those things that seems so obvious, it feels like someone should have done it before. But they haven’t. After all, just last week someone finally got the idea to mod a Donkey Kong ROM so that Pauline could save Mario.

That’s exactly what inspired Kenna W., a professional animator, to mod a Legend of Zelda ROM to allow you to play as, well, Zelda. “For me, I played my first Zelda game when I was pretty young, and at the time, I thought the game did star Princess Zelda,” Kenna writes. “I figured I’d get to play as a magical battle princess that saved her kingdom. The game was fun, but I was bummed out that I never got to play as Zelda.” Likewise, 26 years ago, I thought it strange that the game was named for a Zelda but featured no playable character by that name.

Kenna used a sprite editor to pump out the mod in about four days. The editor didn’t allow for changing colours, however, which is why Zelda appears in a green dress. But the game’s opening and closing scrolls also have been edited to completely flip the roles — Zelda is saving Link in this playthrough. She struggled with how to include Link. “In the end, I decided he’s still Link. Even though he’s seemingly powerless to leave a simple room.”

The game is not a ROM unto itself — Kenna didn’t want to run afoul of copyright problems. She created a patch for the Zelda ROM, available from many fine ROM sites you may already know. Both the patch and instructions for running it are available at the link. If you are playing on a Mac, use Nestopia and this tool to patch the file.

Zelda Starring Zelda: The Story [Kenna Writes Stuff]

  • You know, games like these would make people like Anita Sarkeesian happy; with the “hero” role being filled by a female character… Maybe.

Edit: And before people misinterpret my meaning; I’m glad to see old school games get changed to reverse the roles. It makes things interesting to see from a visual perspective, especially when they are done for good reasons. I fully support those that go to these lengths to create something like this.

  • What is good is that for Zelda that story doesn’t suffer too much in the grand scheme of things, either. Ganon kidnaps Link because he knows Link has the Triforce of Courage, and Zelda must use her wisdom to fix everything. You just have to ignore the fact that everyone treats Zelda like Link, and that I am unfamiliar with LTTP’s story.

  • It really didn’t make much difference to me when i was 8 whether i played as link or zelda or even wally.. it was about fun.. the gender roles didn’t make any difference to playing..

As for Anita.. i don’t think she will ever be happy regardless of changes made..

  • One question I have with all of this is, why not make your own story? Surely there’s enough room in this world for a story about Link saving Zelda, and a completely different female saving a guy in a different story?

  • Yet another example of how feminists only use video games as a vehicle for political activism and personal grievances.

  • Dissapointed this wasn’t a new game. But yes, keep up the mods internet, one day tey’ll listen…one day.
