Blizzard Reveals Hearthstone: Heroes Of Warcraft [Updated]

Blizzard has just announced Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, a free-to-play collectible card game set in the universe of Warcraft. You can play as one of nine World of Warcraft classes, collect cards and battle people online.

There's no release date yet, but the game will be out for PC and Mac, with an iPad version coming "shortly thereafter". The game is coming out soon, Blizzard said — "Not Blizzard soon, but IRL soon." You can sign up for Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft on Blizzard's website right now, and the beta will launch in Q3 2013.

This game was developed by a small team of 15 people, Blizzard chief creative officer Rob Pardo said while announcing the game during a PAX East panel this morning. The goal: create a simple, competitive game with a more mobile team than it used for bigger beasts like StarCraft II and Diablo III. They want it to be "small in scope, but epic in gameplay," Pardo said.

During the panel today, Blizzard brought out an announcer to describe a 1v1 game as it happened. It looks a lot like Magic: The Gathering with Warcraft characters and abilities. We saw Warlocks and Druids facing off, summoning monsters and attacking one another in turn-based combat.

The characters and beasts chat and comment as they fight, sometimes saying hilarious things in traditional Blizzard style. There are a lot of Warcraft-themed cards, from ghouls and demons to Ragnaros, the fire god. This looks very cool.

I am so excited for this!! There was so much ridiculous hate in the Twitch chat, the usual crap you see on the forums. Getting ahead of myself here, but I am also excited to see what else this "versatile and scrappy" team can do in the future! Exciting times for Blizzard.

Why is this so exciting? The WoW TCG never picked up a substantial player base. Blizzard shoe-horned packs it into WoW Collector's Editions and lured people with the chance of in-game mounts and pets like Spectral Tigers etc. Despite leveraging WoW's popularity, no-one cared. This seems like any other, by-the-numbers trading card game like MTG, Vanguard or Yugioh.

It's not as popular as MTG, naturally, but it has a fairly decent player base.

For card game action, the only game to be excited about is "Android : Netrunner"!!!

I find it exciting, you don't. No matter what I say you won't get it. The WoW TCG isn't huge compared to MTG or YuGiOh, but it's big enough to have clubs at the gaming shops I visit. It's different to the TCG anyway.

to paraphrase the Boss from saints row:
"A Fucking Card game....... A FUCKING CARD GAME!!!!!!! ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR FUCKING MIND!!!!!"

So what is it? 'Strategy' is a pretty broad term.

I'm not sure what the policy is for linking to other websites, but here it is on the US site

Well my comment seems pretty dumb this morning, but there was no info last night when it was posted.

This strikes me as something it would have been better not to pre announce and just kind of announce it on the day as a nice surprise.

Please with a better option for Roleplaying...

lol card game, maybe trying to keep WoW relevant for the movie ?

9 million subscribers buddy. Several million more than its nearest competitors. But keep the hate coming, Im sure youll have your chance to do a little dance in 2 expansions time when its only a million ahead...

It's worth noting that there's still money involved. It's free-to-play but the cards are brought in booster packs. Not that that's a bad thing, it's how these sorts of card games have always worked.
