Kickstart This Documentary About The LGBT Gaming Community

David Gil wants to make a documentary about the ever-growing community of LGBT gamers, and you're going to help him. Isn't that what Kickstarter is for?

Gil's project, Gaming in Color, aims to "take a closer look at the challenges and the growth of these communities in the gaming world." Gil himself is billed as a freelance director and cinematographer.

The gaming world is far more diverse than the media would have you think. To counter this, we'll be documenting the experiences of LGBT and women gamers / game developers to introduce perspectives you may not have seen before.

The rewards range from a DVD to the typical ridiculous $US10,000 trip, dinner and screening. But considering how often I still hear homophobic slurs being thrown around, by gamers and others alike, I think this is definitely something worth funding. The more prevalent the LGBT gaming community makes itself, the more educated — and less hateful — the rest of our little corner of the world will become.

So far the project has raised over $US5,000 of its $US50,000 goal, and it's still got 47 days to go.

LGBT?? Yes I should probably google it but I also expected the article to inform us what the hell LGBT is.

You must be new to Kotaku...

Computer says no. Perhaps I have just not read any articles regarding this. Should we just assume anyone reading this article knows what it is?

Seeing as the term has been in usage for 20+ years, I don't think it's too far a stretch.

Googled it. Funny enough I lived in Sydney with a gay couple for 3 years and never once heard this used.

His comment was in reference to the below-average writing abilities of some of Kotaku's staff.

Oh well then yeah this makes complete sense. Surprised it was not a Logan article.

lol, seriously dude, how've you never heard that phrase before?? I usually see it at least once or twice a day in some random article I read or through the news and I'm not even really linked to LGBT circles...

inb4 some idiot is confused as to why the LGBT community would need this.

I'm pretty sure hatred and confrontational attitudes are the opposite of what they're going for in the movie.

Well the LGBT certainly doesn't NEED its gamers documented. Why would anyone care about someone who is playing the games just like everyone else is? Why make that divide?

They better skew the footage far more on the side of covering and investigating the game developers who explore LGBT themes.

Well... I don't think the LGBT gaming community is 'growing'. It's always been there, just more people are taking notice and being more inclusive.

Can I trust this guy to represent the queer community properly? No.. I don't know who the hell he is.

You personally know everyone who prepares food for you that you eat? You even know the people made the car you drive and the public transport that you trust enough to use when you need to get around?? Damn dude... You must be so trusting only because of the thousands and thousands of people you know personally!

Hopefully this will help kick start a progressive movement within the gaming industry.

I am looking forward to the day that this issue is so common that we don't even recognise the stigma that was shrouded over it at some stage. I just hope it's in my lifetime.

LGBT Gaming Community? That's essentially my twitter feed.

For something named "Gaming in Colour", I thought it was about racism in games/game communities. Still, it's good to see people are trying to raise awareness of the things gamers have swept under the carpet for a while now. Even if it's always a little disappointing to always see the popular issues of LGBT and sexism discussed and never any of the other prejudices that exist.

As a side note, the embedded video is a 404 and does Reddit really need the click-through?

    If I don't at least get a mention I'll be disappointed :p

"The gaming world is far more diverse than the media would have you think."

Once again we have the notion that diversity equals non-white, female and gay. If you gather a hundred million white heterosexual men from across the world, there is zero diversity, because they are supposedly all the same. But somehow the "LGBT community" is a bastion of diversity despite their utterly predictable lockstep opinions and behavior.

I also like how LGBTs always claim they're no different from anyone else and want to be treated the same, but then clearly go out of their way to present themselves as something completely separate and different.

      Hear, hear!

All minorities squeal the same when you beat them with a metal baton, amirite?

If those LGBT monsters want to be treated the same, they just need to take off those pink triangles they wear!

      VOTE TONY ABBOTT #1

Battlecattle raises a good point, saying one small portion of the population is diverse and lumping everyone else into another category is hypocritical and using labels to segregate the population is contrary to any notion of equality.

Frankly I don't know how you can see anything from way up there on your high horse.

This has no relation to anything I said, so I don't know why you're talking to me about it.

You're pretending to be a fascist douchebag for a joke, right? Acting like an insane Men's Right's Activist to make an ironic comment about how privileged, white, male, middle class twats make utterly retarded commentary containing feeble pseudo intellectual ramblings that they think hides their vicious prejudice but in fact just makes it more creepy?

I'm on board man, I love, support and endorse the LGBT community as much as you, that's why I'm also making sardonic commentary that you would expect from an uneducated redneck muppet!

I get your joke man but just remember - REAL people can't be so ridiculously stupid as to pretend that white, straight males are somehow victimised. You keep that schtick up, people will realise you're taking the p*ss :)

          But love your work:

'But somehow the "LGBT community" is a bastion of diversity despite their utterly predictable lockstep opinions and behavior.'

That kind of insane, hypocritical craziness is comedy gold! It's like you ripped it straight from a Neo Nazi pamphlet!

I can't wait to see your material on The Jews, I bet it's a riot!

"You're pretending to be a fascist douchebag for a joke, right?"

Where is the fascism in my post?

"Acting like an insane Men's Right's Activist to make an ironic comment about how privileged, white, male, middle class twats make utterly retarded commentary containing feeble pseudo intellectual ramblings that they think hides their vicious prejudice but in fact just makes it more creepy?"

There is no such thing as "privilege," in the "social justice" sense. It's an imaginary construct that only exists to give misandry and racism a fabricated veneer of legitimacy.

You are in no position to accuse others of pseudo-intellectual ramblings after comparing LGBTs to Jews (lol), and accusing me of advocating violence against them.

"REAL people can't be so ridiculously stupid as to pretend that white, straight males are somehow victimised."

They are now, thanks to racist heterophobic misandrists like you.

"That kind of insane, hypocritical craziness is comedy gold! It's like you ripped it straight from a Neo Nazi pamphlet!"

What is insane or hypocritical about it, and how is it related to Nazism?

"I can't wait to see your material on The Jews, I bet it's a riot!"

You're the one who brought up Jews. I never said or implied anything about them.

You have not said anything intelligible or relevant about my post. You're just throwing around random accusations pulled from thin air.

    I'm gonna play devil's advocate here when i say ' i don't get it'.

Who is this for? I'm assuming the makers of the doco want it to be for everyone, but really the majority of people who will support/watch it will be from the LGBT community. So is this some kind of self serving pat on the back?

Why do these people (yes 'people' just like the rest of us) deserve to have a documentary made about them? Because they play games and just happen to be LGBT? Isn't that segregating them further from society, by creating labels and asserting their differences? and wouldn't this be contrary to what (i imagine) is the aim of doing something like this?

What challenges have they really overcome? I'm pretty sure they'd be able to walk to the store and buy a game and play it on their console/pc of choice like the rest of us, so where's the 'chalenge' in that? I understand that they may face abuse at the hands of some 13yo COD moron, but don't we all? Those loud mouths abuse EVERYONE equally, they aren't aware of their victim's sexual orientation.

At least when talking about game developers, they are actually doing SOMETHING, maybe tackling issues and going about their projects in a different way or from a different perspective, that seems interesting. But LGBT people that happen to play games? I don't think they really need a documentary about them more than any other type of person.
