We’ve seen music software on consoles before — you could make music on Mario Paint for goodness sake — but I’m not sure if we’ve seen anything quite like the Korg M01D on the 3DS. And when you put it in the hands of someone who knows what they’re doing? You can get some pretty spectacular results.
As someone who used to quite enjoy making laptop music with relatively stripped back old school software like Fruity Loops and Reason (showing my age here) music software on video game consoles always seemed a little inflexible — not enough options, no real scope to truly make your own music. But the Korg M01D is pushing things pretty far.
The M01D is actually a really good synth! Surprisingly good. If you know what you’re doing, you’ll be able to create some pretty good stuff with this thing.
Nobuyoshi Sano, one of the brains behind the M01D, knows what he is doing. As a musician himself, who has written music for games such as Ridge Racer and Tekken, he was instrumental (urgh) in putting this project together. Check out this track, from CT+X, to get an idea of the kind of quality that can be produced using these tools.
Pretty incredible that such a sophisticated tool set is being released for the 3DS. It hits the 3DS e-store in Japan in May. We can expect it here at some point during the winter (hopefully).
