Ouya sent out some early units to backers of its Kickstarter campaign and received some pretty poor early reviews as a result. But, in a statement sent to Games Industry International, Ouya is claiming that the final review units will see a marked improvement.
Ouya is calling this early release a ‘preview period’, and claimed that units released in May would make it easier for outlets to provide a more balanced view of the device in preparation for the retail launch in June.
“We will be making Ouya review units available in early to mid-May so that you are able to review the more complete consumer experience and prepare your coverage in time for the June 4th retail launch,” claimed a rep, in a statement. “To clarify for you — Ouya has sent no review units out to press. Any reviews you have seen online are a result from individuals who received early backer units from supporting our Kickstarter.”
It sounds a little bit like spin. Although I have little doubt retail units will provide a better experience for users when they’re released in June, these early reviews clearly represent, on some level, the Ouya as a product and what it will be like to use one.
Still, I’m keen. I like the idea of the Ouya, and many of the issues seem to be on the software and server side, which is something that realistically could be fine tuned for the official launch.
