Legendary film critic Roger Ebert has passed away at the age of 70 after a long battle with cancer. Ebert wasn’t just a film critic and made headlines in the gaming press late in his life by sparring with gamers about the worth of the medium. Ultimately, he clearly gave damn about the beauty of art — film or otherwise.
Let’s remember him fondly: a giant of criticism (and as a fan of one very cool video game).

RIP. I was a fan of Ebert – I even mostly agreed with him about his much villified ‘games are not art’ comment – I just thought he took it a bit further than was justified.
I didn’t agree with his criticism of games, but he was ultimately challenging games to be better, and that’s a good thing. In fact, that’s about as noble a goal as you’ll get in the industry, and if developers continue to use his comments as a benchmark in trying to prove him wrong, it’s a legacy we should be grateful for.
On the film front, he was probably the most referred to film critic in the world, and certainly one who was widely respected. Hopefully he and Gene are passing judgement on the after-life right now. Two (very grateful) thumbs up, Mr Ebert. RIP.

oh man. the fellow was an amazing film critic – one of the two film critics i’d refer to when wanting a better understanding of a film, or when looking for ideas for things to watch (the other being Mark Kermode).
his whole gaming thing was an interesting topic too, though i didnt agree.
the film watching world is poorer for his absence.

A very sad day for the film world. Ebert was the easily the most prolific, thoughtful film critic of his time, and contributed much to the art that he loved.

He will be missed. An excellent piece he wrote recently regarding death:
That’s a damn shame. At least he lived life doing what he loved, even after losing his jaw.
This is so out of the blue, I had no idea he had cancer again. Or still.
I will always remember him for his Star Wars The Phantom Menace review in which he praised George Lucas in particular for the use of computer generated visuals. He gave is 3.5/5 and called it “an astonishing achievement in imaginative filmmaking.”
I think he lost his touch in his later years
