See! Even Jet Li Thinks Competitive Gaming Is A Sport!

I would have imagined Jet Li would be too busy making movies and doing some serious stretching to play video games. Turns out that isn’t the case. Not only is Jet Li a pretty big gamer, he also has opinions about games. Real ones! One of these opinions is that competitive gaming is serious business and should be treated as such. According to Jet Li, competitive gaming is a legitimate sport.

“If poker card games and chess both have the players sitting down and are considered sports, why not virtual gaming as well?” He said in an interview translated by MMO Culture. “There are 2 kinds of sports, 1 physical and 1 mental. There is no good reason to debunk virtual gaming as a sport, and I believe the participants of such virtual PvP events have the same mentality as physical athletes.”

Jet Li was attending an Age of Wushu PvP tournament. According to Li, he’s been involved with games since he was 20 years old. One of the cameramen working on his second movie had a computer, and Jet Li began playing whenever he wasn’t filming. He toyed with the idea of trying to help build a video game to spread Chinese culture, but was too busy to make the idea a reality.

It’s an interesting interview — and worth reading.
