Skyrim Will Get No More DLC

The folks behind Skyrim say they’re off to the next adventure, which could very well mean there’s no more content planned for Bethesda’s massive role-playing game. UPDATE: Bethesda marketing VP confirms that there’s no more DLC coming to Skyrim.

In a blog post today, Bethesda’s Skyrim team writes that it is moving on: “For the last year and a half we’ve been working on new content for Skyrim; from the game updates, Creation Kit, Steam Workshop, Kinect support, to DLCs. Parts of our team have also been in pre-production on our next major project, and that game is at the point where it requires the studio’s full attention to make it our biggest and best work yet.

“Even though we’re moving on, we’ll still have minor updates to Skyrim as needed. We’ve invested so much of ourselves into Skyrim and will never truly say goodbye to it.”

Does that mean no more downloadable content? Bethesda has released three DLC packs so far — Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn — and only Dragonborn really felt like the expansion pack-sized DLC promised by lead designer Todd Howard. We’ve reached out to Bethesda for confirmation, but it sure sounds like there’s nothing else coming.

          • Sadly, it’s looking like Redguard won’t be released. But the other three, DB, DG and Hearth are totally worth getting. Crossbows are fantastic (ignore the slow reload time, it’s not slow at all!), you can build and pimp your homestead, there are tonnes of Vampires to slaughter mercilessly (I do that when I tire of my ethnic cleansing of Thalmor… or if I’ve run out. :p). It’ll be the biggest consumer of your time for the next month, guaranteed! Now if I could just get my wife to stop playing… I miss getting laid. 🙁

  • Hope they release a pack with them all for a discount on steam, xbl and psn (if anyone still plays it on their ps3). Ive been waiting for that.

  • Awesome. So people who play Skyrim on a real platform, have waited for the ridiculous 30-day timed exclusivity on “the first three DLCs” for the title, only to find out that there are no more DLC without the exclusivity.

Get stuffed, Bethesda. This is big slap in the face for those who have waited patiently on your content.

      • Have you not heard of the PC master race? I kinda agree in the case of Skyrim… so many bugs, you’ll probably need the console to fix some quest errors at some point.

        • Dude, I love my PC, I’d pick it over a console any day because I love modding almost as much as gaming itself. That’s the number one reason I hardly play consoles outside of a few select games. Doesn’t mean I think consoles are shit, just not for me. My wife’s the opposite, she loves my (now her) 360 and hates using my PC, except to eat my quota grabbing Glee, Supernatural and annoying shows…

  • ” …and that game is at the point where it requires the studio’s full attention to make it our biggest and best work yet”

…sounds like Bethesda saw that video of TES-online, the terrible response to it and the urgent need to un-f*ck it.

    • TESO is being developed by ZeniMax Online, a completely separate subsidiary of ZeniMax with plenty of people. Bethesda has no hand in it and it would not be too bright to shuffle their crews around, considering how they want to keep releasing Fallout- and regular TES-titles too.

      • I dig that, but if you think a publisher doesn’t have input into a subsidiary’s project, you’re mistaken buddy. I think the big problem they’ll be facing is the expectation of another ‘Skyrim’., and making a follow up to something like that is a tall order, considering how Skyrim was Bethesda’s bubby from the start. It’s a bit unreasonable to expect TES-O to be of the same ilk when coming from a different, albeit internal, studio, but that sounds like what they’re facing, especially considering the poor response to the video.

        • Huh? I didnt think or write anything like that and indeed publishers influence is beside the original point of my reply, that being your suggestion that Bethesda is now fixing TESO and thats the reason they finish releasing DLC. ZeniMax being unhappy with whats happening at TESO and Bethesda doing whatever they do are two vastly different things and to suggest, its not requires a fair bit of evidence, esp since this announcement fits in with how Bethesda has conducted development work so far with its franchises (which TESO has no part in, despite being a TES-game).

  • Curses, I had heard there was going to be a Redguard focused dlc coming up.
    Not happy Jan.

  • I’m taking this as confirmation of the Legendary edition that includes all DLC that popped up on Ozgameshop but now appears to have vanished. Wonder if the June release was accurate though.

  • Obviously means, a GOTY- or Ultimate Edition should not be too far away. Also most likely means, they are now working on Fallout 4. Very good news overall.

  • So does that mean we can finally get a GOTY edition? I might finally get around to buying it. As long as it’s the GOTY edition, and not the Goatse edition. I don’t want that one.

  • Seriously? What happened to the guarentee of massive expansion packs?

Instead we get a good one, a minor update for house building and a few extra missions with vampires?

Usually I’m not one to complain but this is very disappointing considering how good the DLC for the Fallout games were.

  • Translation:
“We’re not making DLC anymore, because it makes modders cry when it conflicts with everything they’ve got and they have to go and fix/download everything again to mesh with our changes. Besides, it’s not like we were doing anything that much more amazing than what you can find on the nexus or workshop anyway. Seriously, these people are insane, go check out their awesome stuff. Hm? What about consoles? Errrr… well. Uh. There are ways you can move mods to consoles, I guess. But, uh… seriously, was there anyone who had the option between console and PC and cares about mods, but chose console? There’s only so much you can do to protect people from themselves.”

  • I was really hoping they would do a DLC focussing more on the Foresworn, or even make them a fully joinable faction. I am sure modders have it well covered but I would like more focus on them that becomes canon.
