Tell Us Dammit: The State Of Handheld Gaming

Because of my love for Luigi’s Mansion 2, I’m currently doing something I haven’t done for the longest time: I’m carrying a handheld console in the bag I take to work. Years ago this was a staple thing for me but as iOS games started getting better, and I started using tablets, I usually just left my Vita and 3DS at home. Do you guys still use handhelds? And if so, how and when are you using them?

To be perfectly honest it’s been a long time since I actually used a handheld console so I’m sort finding my feet again in a weird way. Before it was a way to kill time on public transport but now I find that I treat ‘serious’ handheld gaming almost in the same way I read a book. I settle into bed, snuggle up and get playing.

But yeah, playing on trains. I’ve been doing it. But now it seems like I have to overcome a real barrier to do so. It just seems so much easier to take my phone out of my pocket and mess around on Twitter and Facebook. I think what I’ve discovered is this: the game has to be very, very good. Ghost Trick was good enough, and Luigi’s Mansion 2 is good enough. That said, it sort of feels cool to be using a handheld again.

How are you using your handheld these days? And what are you playing?
