Today’s big news — not just in sports, either — is 12-year NBA veteran Jason Collins revealing he is gay. Collins isn’t really a star; he’s a journeyman more known for getting destroyed by Shaq in the NBA Finals his rookie year. Perhaps you may have seen him somewhere else?
Yes. He’s on the PS2 cover of NBA 2K6, in his signature getting-mauled-by-Shaq-in-the-playoffs pose (this time, the first round in 2005.) Hat tip to Stephen Vu of Incorrect Basketball Knowledge for pointing this out to me on Twitter.

It’s great that he’s out, I hope he has a wonderful life and this doesn’t impact him in any negative way at all in his sport or life as some negative minded people have a habit of doing. I hope this encourages other sportsmen and women to be openly honest about their lives instead of feeling they have to live a lie.
Basketballer is gay. is that really news?
First openly gay player in the four major leagues.
Yes.
Wasn’t John Amaechi the first NBA player to out himself. I thought he did so while he was playing, too, but now I guess he didn’t.
I wonder how many people tried to contact Tim Hardaway or George Takei for comment.
John Ameachi was long retired, Jason Collins is very much still actively playing in the NBA.
Agree with Zap – yes it is.
A gay basketballer being in the background of a photo used on a video game cover however, is definitely NOT news.
How coincidental they made a cover of Jason Collins ramming Shaq from behind.
Come back when you reach puberty.
