The Next 3DS Zelda Is Set In The World Of Link To The Past

Nintendo is developing a new Zelda game for the 3DS. In Japanese, the game is called The Legend of Zelda: Kamigami no Triforce 2. You probably remember the first Kamigami no Triforce game’s English title, A Link to the Past.

The game will feature a new storyline, new puzzles and new dungeons. Link will also have the ability to turn into a drawing on the wall to make his way around corners.

The game will be out this Christmas in the West, and it will be out in early 2014 for Japan.

According to Nintendo’s US branch, it is “set in the world of A Link to the Past“. It currently does not have an English language title.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past was originally released on the SNES in 1991. Many consider it one of the best Zelda games ever made.

  • I’m not trying to be a jerk, but I’ve never really understood the Link to the Past love. I stopped playing about three princesses in because I got bored. Link’s Awakening had a story, some humour, and better gameplay. I liked it a lot more.

I know taste is subjective, I’ve just never been able to understand LTTP’s pedestal.

      • The open world exploration was top notch, the lack of direction somehow added to this as every dungeon discovered, then completed, provided a great sense of accomplishment.

The light/dark world mechanic was impressive for its time, not only as a concept but they implemented it perfectly and constructed some insane puzzles towards the end.

I’m more than happy to place this gem on a pedestal.

      • I don’t even remember a link to the past, though my favourite hand held variety was always the minish cap.

Though i’m loving this before japan news, gives me hope that my 3DS XL will still get some love when I’m done with Luigi and fire emblem (hurrah my copy just shipped)

      • Hmm.,.. I think maybe that’s probably my problem. I came to it long after playing through the later Zeldas, and I’ve never played the earlier NES games, so it was just a rougher version of the games I’d already played.

        • Ah. I think to really get why older people love it so much you’ve got to have been in love with The Legend of Zelda on the NES and then got your hands on this brand new console with a brand new Zelda game. It was an amazing tech leap that brought in what was essentially the first fully realised Zelda game. In a lot of ways the difference between NES and SNES was bigger than SNES and N64.

    • My favourite zelda game is still links awakening, but link to the past is an incredible game and imo the second best zelda game.
It is a little slow after the first dungeon but picks up again

    • I agree that Link’s Awakening is the better game, mostly cuz you didnt need a phd to solve it!

Im still stuck on my GBA copy of LTTP

  • Looks pretty sweet.

I use 3D sparingly because it gives me eye strain and headaches so I hope dungeons aren’t completely reliant on it being turned on all the time.

      • As I’ve discussed with friends, ALttP is my favourite game in the series, hands down. To be a sequel to ALttP, I’m going to be incredibly critical of it. And thus far the graphical style, camera position and new puzzle mechanics just aren’t grabbing me.

    • Mine too, although that’s partly because I left the Nintendo side after the SNES and gameboy and followed Squaresoft into the arms of Sony. The original Legend of Zelda was one of my first two NES cartridges ever (along with the Super Mario/Duck Hunt cartridge, of course) and Zelda II was the very next one I got.

I do regret missing out on Ocarina, given the rave reviews for it, although I admit that I tried playing it on emulator once and just couldn’t get into it after the first 20 minutes or so. I assume it got a lot better! I’m still considering snapping up a 2nd hand Wii and revisiting the Zelda series…

  • Dammit, that’s put me one step closer to actually buying a 3DS. If Nintendo announce a new 3DS Metroid or Advance Wars, my wallet will be in a world of hurt.

  • The joy of this reveal is only slightly marred by the fact that this will be 3D graphics and not good ol’ 16 bit pixel graphics. Oh well, it was fun having money as opposed to having a 3DS but now that’s over.

  • Does anyone else think that this is that start of a “New” Zelda series (similar to New Super Mario Bros) where they make new games with old-school mechanics, and they alternate this with fleshed out 3D console entries?

If so, I’d be totally down for that.

  • Very underwhelmed. The top view Zelda games are the ones i have no real interest in. And trust me i have tried to play them all. Just got bored and gave up.

  • This, Mr Nintendo, has got me really excited again! I’ve been waiting for a follow up to ALTTP for ever. Thank you!

  • This is a new low for Nintendo. Cheap cop-out. Re-use old designs and code, and half arse another poorly written story. Pathetic really.
