Against all the odds, the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset could emerge in the coming months to be the most exciting new peripheral in video games. And that’s even when you get bad flashbacks to the early 90s and VR’s prior failings.
Those curious to see just what makes the headgear tick, well, here you go: ifixit have got their hands on a developer kit and disassembled it, tying the parts to a rock so the vultures can feast on them.

what type of VR is this? is it total immersion like “Red Dwarf” or “Futurama” or is it just a head set that you wear on your head and you still have to use a game controller?
afaik, it detects head movements. but then again it’s up to the app (or the game) to decide whether to view based on gamepad input, or headset movement input.
If you paired it with something like Microsoft’s Kinnect to add full body tracking, would that do what you’re after?
A dude has already done that but not on the Rift. He hacked a kinect to give his head mounted display z-axis head movement and talks about possible 3D body movement for a controller. He also uses AR to put a Portal gun in his hands, it’s pretty sweet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0-dsbeasgA

It’s a lot like the Wiimote and 1:1 sword fights. The tech only has the potential to get halfway there. It hits a dead end between the core concept and the ideas it inspires. It’ll never be true ‘walk around inside a virtual world while sitting at your desk’ VR, but hopefully now it’s out in the wild we’ll see some more inspired uses for it. I don’t think it’s going to rock the FPS world but with any luck we’ll see some cool stuff.
Why did you guys buy computers since they will be able to make better ones in the future? Own a car? Sheesh.
Any step to Full VR is a good step I think. Even if the Rift isn’t fully there still a new experience then looking at your monitor. Im keen.
I want to love the Rift so hard, BUT
What they don’t tell you is that you need a PC capable of doing 720p x 2 @ 60 fps MIN
Any framerate drop below that and the world tears apart and you’ll end up wearing your breakfast on your shoes.
Dunno about your rig, but mine just can’t handle that to save itself. I’d have to drop a few coins to bring it up to par!
nope, still not worth it, not until they get something going like they have on Sword Art Online, where it intercepts your brainwave signals and uses it to control the character
