Remember Gamers 4 Croydon? Back in the dark days, when Michael Atkinson was the Attorney General of South Australia and refused to engage on the R18+ issues, Gamers 4 Croydon was an attempt by David Doe, Chris Prior and a host of others to try and dislodge Atkinson from his seat in Croydon and kickstart the R18+ debate. It was a brilliant initiative that made headlines across the globe and helped mobilise gamers on the issue.
But that’s history — Atkinson stepped down and his successor, John Rau, had a different position on R18+. Fast forward three years and we now have an R18+ rating for video games in Australia.
Kotaku Australia, however, is still in touch with some of the founders of Gamers 4 Croydon and today, in a furore of hype for Neill Blomkamp’s latest movie Elysium, David Doe informed us of a little fact that somehow slipped past us all those years ago.
Neill Blomkamp’s Aunt actually donated money to the Gamers 4 Croydon campaign. Actually, she donated a lot of money…
Alongside three others, Neil Blomkamp’s aunt actually donated $500, which was the highest donation Gamers 4 Croydon received for their campaign.
It’s pretty incredible. Neill Blomkamp was initially slated to direct the Halo movie, and is now directing the video game-influenced Elysium. Obviously, he’s influenced by video game culture and it’s interesting to see that his Aunt, who lives in Australia feels the same way.
