You Play This Video Game On A Painting, Using An NES Controller

for(){}; is a clever use of both projector and paintings. The canvas holds the background, and the the elements a player can interact with are projected on top of that canvas — meaning, you can play a video game on a painting. Awesome.

This video was uploaded last month, but the installation was put up in Kittredge Gallery in Tacoma, WA as a collaboration between Brent Watanabe and Cable Griffith.

From Watanabe’s webpage:

In for( ){ };, there is no beginning or end to the game, just collecting and wandering, birthing and consuming, an arbitrary point system rising until your inevitable death and the birth of another generation. It is a game mechanism without the game. An addictive but essentially aimless experience. The piece is a triptych of playable acrylic paintings, controlled by the viewer using a NES controller.

The game might be “pointless”, but I’d still love to try it. Ah, art.
