If you think Valve Time is bad now, wait until their engineers are on another planet. Meet Jeep Barnett. He’s a programmer at Valve, a former student at DigiPen, and one of the original creators of Narbacular Drop, the 3D puzzle game that let you navigate the world using a pair of connected portals. He went on to help create that game’s spiritual successor, Portal.
And he wants to go to Mars. Seriously. He wants to live there.
“Living in the wilderness has always appealed to me on a primal level,” Barnett told me in an email. “I love being able to take responsibility and direct action for my day to day survival. Lately I find myself taking backpacking trips on less worn paths and staying out for longer. Becoming a Mars frontiersman is the ultimate commitment to that sort of lifestyle.”
This month, Barnett applied to Mars One, a privately funded program designed to establish a human colony on the red planet. The program, which will be partially funded by a giant reality TV show starring applicants and astronauts, hopes to be “the biggest media spectacle in history.” Their goal: to colonize Mars by 2023. (In other words, before Half-Life 3 comes out.)
“I grew up believing that everything in science fiction would eventually become science fact,” Barnett says in his Mars One video application, which you can watch here. “So I get super excited for each advancement that happens in my lifetime. I want to help make this a reality.”
And, yes. He’s serious.
“When you consider all the crazy places that humans have settled on Earth, living on Mars doesn’t seem that far-fetched!” Barnett told me when I asked if he’d be ready to leave right away.
“We’re actually coming up on the 100th anniversary of the first permanent base in Antarctica. I wouldn’t want to hop a ship without the years of critical training and preparation needed, but hypothetically, yes, I’d be ready to leave next week without regret.”
If selected, Barnett said he wants to help maintain safe living conditions, engineer facilities and infrastructure, help ensure that they have a stable food supply, and create entertainment, like games and music, for everyone else on the foreign planet.
I asked what he’d want to bring. “I’m not sure what the weight limit is, but I know that every pound is expensive,” Barnett said. “I’d want a simple infallible music device such as parts for a xylophone and a thumb-drive full of photos, art, comics, books, music, and games from Earth.”
And as for his current projects? Surely Half-Life 3 (or whatever) must be more exciting than Mars?
“It’s hard to talk about this Mars stuff with seriously because I know that it’s such a long shot,” Barnett said. “In the likely scenario that I live out the rest of my days on Earth, I’d still be completely satisfied! I love going to work every day with all the awesome projects and people at Valve. But if I’m selected to go, I would definitely push to tie up some loose ends.”

Yeah, here is a crazy idea, Valve…how about developing a decent new game, featuring stuff like innovation and polish and – you know – generally things that you guys have been known for about ten years ago?!
Heck, if you really pine for the red planet, make a game focusing on that! Cant do much worse than the competition with D3, surely?!
rant_out
They’re working on Source 2
So basically by the time I retire, I will have a new Valve-game to show to my grand kids.
Sorry for the snark, appreciate the info.
Pretty sure in the last 10 years they made Portal, I think that covers innovation and as for polish, you couldn’t get a more polished game than either TF2 or L4D. And yes I mean polish as in game design, not faces with parallax mapped stubble hairs polish.
Yes, Portal was a significant accomplishment, or rather Narbacular Drop, made by DigiPen, before Valve recognized their talent and hired them to redo it as Portal. Portal 2 was rinse-repeat. Another great game, but hardly original. L4D and TF2 meh…but I take your point.
By the time Half-Life 3 comes out, Mars will be over populated, filled with pollution and it will of been renamed ‘Earth 2’ so by that time they will be in search of ‘Earth 3’
Well Phobos and Deimos make Earth 2 Episodes 1 and 2 (which have more of a Doom feel thanks to messed up portal experiments) – don’t know if we’ll ever get Earth 3 or if we’ll be waiting and waiting because those involved keep getting distracted adding features to their colony ships and dabbling in innovative concepts on Venus. :p
Valve’ll never ever find earth 3, we know that already
Yay for humanity
