Steam Greenlight Users React To ‘Gayest Game Ever Made’

What you’ll initially notice about My Ex-Boyfriend The Space Tyrant is one of two things: the “Approved for distribution by the Ministry of Homosexual Pornography” screen on the trailer, or sometimes nearly naked hot men prancing about. This, I assume, is intentional — the recently-launched Steam Greenlight page boasts that My Ex-Boyfriend is the “gayest game ever made”.

The users on Steam Greenlight have noticed, and the game’s page is full of people arguing about homosexuality. Here’s a small sample of the responses, which range from endorsement for the game to disgust that something like it could exist.

Games are meant to be diverse, and I so I would much like more games to embrace subjects like these in different ways. A comical/sketched way like this is pretty entertaining, but other genres should have their way with this as well. Wouldn’t have minded gay marriage in Skyrim, or development in relationsships in that game in general. Upvoted.

Unless someone can give a specific reason why this game, and it’s gay theme, should NOT be on Steam, upvote it. Give it the same chance any “straight” game filled with babes and tits has.

Gunnar Clovis:

Haha; I’m not homosexual, but I am all for this game. Good for you; the world needs some gayness in gaming, as it is so dominized by this noninclusive game design. This is just, fantastic. I’ll play it; as it appears to me to simply be just homosexuality in a comedic storyline, not a “gay porno” as Blujay puts it. Yes, heterosexual males typically are not expected to enjoy a homosexual piece of pornography, but this is a humorous point-and-click adventure game, not porn.

I just have to say, as a gay gamer, no.

Because he’s “that gay guy”. You know the kind- that would wear daisy dukes in space. I could be wrong. You might be that type of gay yourself, and would like to see a gay hero in a video game like that.

However, until we have a gay character in a game that is there with a purpose, and not there just for the sake of being the queer one in, this just will not do! I don’t agree that the first gay game should involve gay romance. To me, it’s the same sin Tera holds. When WILL we, as homosexuals, EVOLVE. Our sexuality is a sum of our parts- it should not be the whole.

I feel bad for “Brian”, the gay male that waited all his life to play this game. Long wait.

All I’m saying is, do you REALLY think Dr. Martin Luther King JR would have been taken seriously with short shorts and pink angel wings on his back?

This feel more like “a background with a character” and not “a character with a background.

This looks like this will be a gay version Leisure Suit Larry which is why I won’t buy this no matter how smart or dumb the humour is. While I don’t condemn Homosexuality but lets be honest, a strait guy wouldn’t enjoy a gay porno unless the porn stars were women or it had a really good story. The devolopers are probably not intending for strait people to like game.

Upvoting just to piss off the right wing religous nutjobs out there.

Hate + WTF responses:

Master Zone:

This game makes me want to projectile vommet… If it did not, then I would be gay, but I am not gay.

If this was lesbians it would be awesome, but its not. Get this shit off steam please.

Get rid of this fag shit.

this game is not for me, and by that i mean full of simple primary colour art and pop culture references…

oh and it looks pretty gay

The responses go on for dozens of pages, with some folk going so far as to report the game for its “sexual content”. Judging from the trailer alone, their reaction refers to the scantily clad men in the game. Last year, a “sex game” got pulled off Steam, because, according to Valve, “Steam has never been a leading destination for erotic material.”

If you’re curious about My Ex-Boyfriend, there’s a freely available demo here.

  • Master Zone has a point, if something doesn’t make you want to projectile vomit you are that thing.

    • Oh mannnnnn.. i am sooo many things right now!!!

You know what i’m not, though? Food poisoning.

    • …. No. He really doesn’t. I am not black, but black people don’t make me want to projectile vomit. And when are people going to get off that bloody soap box? Opinions are like assholes; most smell like shit, but the point is not everyone wants to see other people’s assholes. So keep it to yourselves.
If a gay person makes you want to projectile vomit, then you have deep-seeded problems that a therapist needs to fix. Oh, and you’re probably a homophobic moron. Just sayin’.
Homophobia; it isn’t a fear, you’re just an asshole for being it.

  • I wouldn’t have said it was a particularly flattering depiction of gay men, but it did look like a pretty funny parody of what a redneck might think being gay is like.

    • You mean i’ve wasted all this time at the gym, working out to get killer abs when i just could have become GAY?!!?!
      Well helllooooo sailor!

      • Just the whole thing where he’s wearing the tank top. I feel kind of bad for laughing, but it is a pretty funny cliche.

        • Yeah. I get that’s the whole idea.
I mean the Bears DID get Naughty Bear – so why can’t the Twinks have this?

  • You know if you want to make a game that has the theme about homosexuality that’s fine, I’m cool with that. But I’m hoping the character is more than that. It shouldn’t be what defines him. Because that’s boring, that’s one dimensional character design. If you just feed in all the tropes of stereotypical homosexual behaviour, what is their to set the character apart as an individual? I hope I’m mistaken and their is something else to him, because all I see in the trailer is the developer shouting out “HE’S GAY!”.

  • I love the hate lol. Its just so ridiculously funny. To be honest I couldn’t care less. I thought people moved on from this sbject a long time ago, clearly that is not the case.

  • Ok. My thoughts on this are twofold – 1: if gratuitous T&A can be allowed so can skin-tight shorts and underwear. Peoples opinion can still be respected and the game allowed on steam. if you dont like the game then don’t buy it.
2: Not my cup of tea, but respect to people trying to create it and not take it too seriously. I’d probably buy it just because of that.

  • As a liberal person who defends gay rights in all its aspects, this is a stupid idea and is borderline offensive to gay people. It is basically pointing out that the only thing gay people can say or do involves mincing around like a bunch of queens. Why is it impossible to have a regular character with relatable problems who also happens to be gay, rather than the character being defined as a 40 metre high banner saying GAY… and everything else stringing along next to it. To me, this game is like playing GTA San Andreas with all the characters being white with black-face makeup on.

    • Do you actually care or do you just facebook-care? Because i’d swear there was this thing called “satire” that’s usually used for a different avenue of insight, often going unnoticed by the ignorant.

    • As a gay liberal person who defends gay rights in all its aspects, I wholeheartedly agree. My sexuality does not define me, it’s simply a part of who I am as a whole. I’d much prefer a strong male character who just happened to be gay, with no big deal made of it. Because you know what, being gay ISN’T a big deal.
This game just gives ammunition to those who oppose homosexuality being portrayed in video games. It’s in your face, it’s cringe worthy and panders to every possible stereotype there is. It’s a big backwards step.

      • Given that there are people of every shade of the spectrum out there, including ones just like what’s depicted in this game, why shouldn’t they be allowed to be depicted in a game? Surely you’d agree that gay rights are something all gay people should be able to enjoy, not just the ones that fit your particular view of what gay people are like?

      • Would this line of discussion on the content being “offensive” be any different if you had known that the game was…

        1) Created/done by a homosexual developer/game maker?

        2) It was intentionally kitschy/out there, meant to be a humorous point and click adventure game on swapping the stereotype of man saving princess to man saving male partner? Add to the fact this is probably much more toned down than the original concept he had in mind?

The dev had a quick interview w/ SMH’s Screenplay Blog quite a while back on Feb. Here –

On an aside it’s great to see this game getting some global spotlight via Steam.

  • it takes stereotypes and pushes them to the extreme for comedic affect (at least that’s how it seems to me), that shit happens all the time in comedy games featuring straight people, so I don’t get why this is offensive to gay people, or anyone really, it’s just a game witch focuses on a particular stereotype for it’s running theme.

it’s not like this shit was made to be offensive and I for one find it hilarious.

  • “This game makes me want to projectile vommet… If it did not, then I would be gay, but I am not gay”

This is an amazing quote and I thank you for posting it.

  • I couldn’t care less to be honest… I wouldn’t purchase this game but if someone else wants to play it then they should have the chance to play it. Theres nothing wrong with having more variety of games on Steam.

    • Variety? In games? ON STEAM?!?

  • Just wow at the comments, people finding it offensive to gays cause it only shows that kind of gay person and people will think thats all they are etc. you are
Stupid. Played super mario the other day, dont really like how they portrayed plumbers, offensive even. Plumbers dont jump or throw fireballs now everyone who plays it will think plumbers can do that.

This is basically art you dont like it your problem. Deal with it.

  • Prancing nearly-naked men? Sold. I am all for equal opportunity T&A. Objectified men are in comparatively short supply.

  • Lots of ridiculous straight male and female stereotypes about. Why can’t there be this too?

More gay games doesn’t affect me in any way, have fun, whatever.
