“We’re gonna need a bigger boat.” Rockstar Games just dropped some information on Grand Theft Auto V over on its official site. From the sounds of, some folks will need to be clearing space on their consoles’ storage devices.
The next GTA instalment will require 8GB of space for both Xbox 360 and PS3:
In order to provide the best possible experience for such a massive and detailed world, the game will have installation requirements on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation®3 systems. For Xbox 360, Grand Theft Auto V will ship on two discs; Disc 1 will be used for a one-time mandatory install and Disc 2 will be used to play the game. After the install, players will be able to enjoy both Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online without any need to switch discs.
This initial install will require an Xbox 360 Hard Drive or an external 16GB USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of free space. If using a USB flash drive it must be at least USB 2.0 with a minimum 15mb/s read speed and formatted for Xbox 360 use. A new USB flash drive is recommended to ensure optimum performance. For PlayStation®3, the game ships on one disc and will install content as soon as you insert the game. The install is roughly 8GB, and players will be able to play as soon as the install is complete.
One of the big features of GTA V is the ability to switch between the game’s three main characters on the fly. So, a fan asked if you could hunt down the other characters you weren’t controlling and end their life. You won’t be able to do that — because, duh, you’ll need them later — but there is an interesting wrinkle:
In the open world, the characters are meant to be living their own ongoing and unpredictable personal lives, so understandably it’s not always easy to track one of them down in the vast city of Los Santos or the many towns spread about Blaine County at any given moment, but you will be able to find them. Having found them, (or simply after calling them up and arranging to meet them), you’ll certainly be able to hang out with them, annoy them should you choose, and maybe even assault them, but you won’t be able to kill them. They all have remarkable powers of recovery and good health insurance. The game is based on playing all sides of these three characters’ interwoven stories rather than having generic, interchangeable leads, so permanently killing a major character in that way wouldn’t make sense. If a player is determined enough though, they may well find a way to badly injure one of the characters and switching to that character would just put you in the hospital to continue where you left off.
There are more teases about the possibility of a PC release and the game’s multiplayer in the Q&A. And a gameplay video is apparently on the way too.

That’s a massive install, but one I’m perfectly happy to ensure. People planning on buying a digital version, however, will have fun with that …
only me and other fellow ps3 users will have issue due to the ps3 slow install time, downlaoded Ratchet and Calank on PSN once, took longer to install onto the ps3 then it did to download
I’m a PS3 user and I don’t care if it takes a long time to install 8GB before I can play GTA V…
It’s not like it’s the end of the world or anything
oh i no same here, but the install times are somewaht excesive on ps3
Massive? Really? Total War Rome II is 35GiB…
8gb plus all the game data on the disk – so, conservatively, 12 gb. for a digital download. For console gamers, that’s significant.
Yeah, uncharted 3 is currently on plus, the download is so big it literally took 10min just to prepare the background download, the game is like a total of 45gb man…
Yeah, I noticed that. I’d say it’s a direct duplicate of the blu-Ray data, as many games have multiple copies of the game on them to help load times. I’m not sure it’s worth the hassle, or the HDD space – even though it’s free.
Actually Id say its that big due to all the cutsceens… naughty dog said that they would love more space on the bd as they struggled to cram everything in.
Would cutscenes take up that much space? I mean, 45 gigs worth? I’m not saying they don’t, it just seems like a lot. Surely they’d just create them, take video rips, and plonk them down on the disc.
A friend of mine said the large disc size was multiple copies, to deter piraters, and to have multiple regions and languages on one endlessly re-stampable disc. I assumed the high size of the online version was because the engine was programmed to use the entire disc’s worth of data, rather than just the section which applies to the region it’s being played in. All hearsay, mind you, every last bit. My friend could be full of shite.
Yeah, most games use multiple copies of the game on the disk, however naughty dog have a verry robust streaming engine that they have refined since Jak 1 so they dont require multiple versions on one disk or installs… The thing about uncharted is that it has native uncompressed 720p 2D AND 3D cutsceens along with a 10-15gb single player and a 6-10gb multiplayer…
Its a big game with a shit load of content, and even though it wasnt as good as uncharted 2 it was still a realy good game.
Gotta feel for the people who bought the “gimped” 360 and PS3 consoles with tiny hard drives.
At least with the PS3 they can upgrade their hard drives at a cheap price… 360 users…they are screwed (unless you’re using USB Keys)
As long as Sony don’t release a firmware update that bricks consoles with aftermarket hard drives…
That’s… inconvenient. But I’ll wear it – love that this game will be pushing the hardware, and am still excited for it!
I think what I’m most excited to see is the improved driving, shooting and melee gameplay. Other than that…free falling from a helicopter in to a deep sea dive will probably take up the majority of my time spent on it 😀
Perfectly fine with this. Just glad there’ll be no disc swapping on 360.
I’m not sure how much free space i have left on my PS3.
The only thing i worry about is if GTA V is going to have flying missions? then at least have easier handling then the flying missions from GTA: SA, i broke a controller because it, I know Rockstar goes for realism but leave realistic car handling for your Gran Turismo’s and Forza’s.
Anyways, i preordered the special Steelbook edition and the limited edition strategy guide on the weekend, i absolutely cannot wait for this game.
The car physics in GTAIV were one of my favorite changes to the series. I hope they are similar in V.
An estimate of the PC space needed: 30 GB
I’ve been expecting this: there’s no way you’d be able to fit that city on just one disc. At least they’ve thrown it open to USB installs (something Battlefield 3 wouldn’t do) given I already have a 32GB USB for GoD games (60GB HDD doesn’t cut it anymore) it’ll be nothing to add a second to the mix.
The size of the install doesn’t bother me. The time to do the install will though!
I guess instead of putting in the game and excitedly playing it I will be putting in the game and then cooking dinner while I wait.
PC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just upgraded to a 750gb HDD in my PS3. I have no issue with this.
