Steam Developer Accidentally Trolls Half-Life 3 Fans

Earlier today, the Steam store featured a news item written by a developer claiming that the Half-Life 3 internal beta had been released. As you might've guessed, it was fake -- but anyone looking at Steam could see the "news."

The item is gone now, but people took screenshots, naturally. And here's the best/worst part: the trolling wasn't even intentional.

@DanStapleton It's fake. I posted it testing stuff, didn't really expect it to show up everywhere. -- Gran PC (@GranPC) August 19, 2013

Imagine what it must've been like for a fan to log onto Steam, hop onto their news tab, to see that finally -- finally! There was some concrete Half Life 3 news! Heh, oh no. Oh, and...notice what the first letters in each of the updates spells out?

-Protected against memory editing

-Enhanced texture quality

-No longer crashes on exit

-In the first level of the second chapter, the game no longer crashes

-Solved the glitch where Alyx would get stuck on the conveyor belt

I'm not afraid to admit that I probably laughed a bit too much at the hidden message.

Hopefully little antics like this will dilute the hype. The hype is going to kill that franchise.

Then again, it is Half Life we're talking about. I don't see how any installment of that series could be anything other than stellar.

I found the post (possibly here) the other week far more interesting, with a supposedly core voice actor claiming they hadn't even at all been contacted about even the possibility of doing a HL3.

Though they may have just decided not to use him, or his character isn't in the game.. etc etc.. But they would usually at least say something, not be jerks.. But then Gabe is a jerk, so anything goes I guess!

Or maybe HL3 is jumping on the retro bandwagon, with 16-bit sprites and no voice acting at all.

As one of the 15 voice actors required to do the voice of Gordon freeman, I too have not heard anything about half life 3.

I bet the hidden message was coincidence (a countermeasure for accidentally leaked patch notes), once they noticed it they were all "PENIS we were joking lol"

    HL3 confirmed.
