Brand confusion has long been an issue for the Wii U. Thanks to the confusing name and the similarities between the look of Nintendo’s newest console and their last one, some have mistaken the Wii U for a Wii accessory. This certainly can’t help.
As spotted by Twitterer @Shane1323, Target’s most recent ad for the Wii U uses a picture of a Wii U GamePad resting on top of a Wii. Oops. At least they got the name right — although, if they really want to appeal to people, they should call it “the new Wii”.

I thought the big deal was that it said ‘Wii’ (on a Wii U), then I realised that it WAS a Wii.
Wait. So the the Wii U is an add on for the Wii?

No no no! The Wii U is what you plug your 3DS into to let you play the games on your Wii and TV. It’s it obvious?
your getting confused the wii u is the thing you plug into the gameboy colour which you connect to the 3ds with a 60 dollar adapter which then connects to the wii, got it? good
I’d love to take a peek into a What If machine to see how things would have turned out if Nintendo didn’t rely on their Wii and DS branding when naming the 3DS and Wii U. I imagine there’d be a tonne less customer confusion if they gave them wholly individual names.
There seems to be a lot less confusion between the DS and the 3DS than there appears to be for the Wii and WiiU.
I think it has something to do with people wanting to play games on the 3DS and realising they need to upgrade.
Maybe it’s not that people are too stupid to tell the difference between the Wii and the WiiU, but more a case that they are so disinterested that they couldn’t be bothered learning the difference.
Also perhaps leading with the ‘3’ defines the difference before the system, or perhaps it’s having a number in the name…..
I don’t know, but yeah…. they were f*cking stupid to call the WiiU the WiiU.
True, things with the 3DS have gotten better now. At the start though, lots of people seemed to think it was just another remodel of the DS, like the Lite/DSi/XL/whatever. Maybe the Wii U confusion will have subsided too in another six months or so.
Even something like Super Wii would have made a massive difference. It sounds like it has to be better, right?
I’ve been wanting it to be called the Super Wii since shortly after the Wii came out. Just feels like a great throwback to NES -> Super NES.
Hoping the casual customers that made the Wii a success would somehow know the difference between the Wii and WiiU? Showing off the new controller and making the console a similar size and shape, basically confusing the hell out of them.
You reap what you sow Nintendo.
It’s kinda like Nintendo and Microsoft are having a dumbest name competition. Say what you will about Sony, but 1-2-3-4 is simple and unambiguous.
Nothing wrong with Xbox One name I don’t think. People will call it the Xbone but it’s no worse than idiots calling things the Gaystation or something similarly stupid.
If they’d called the Xbox 360 the Xbox One straight after the other first Xbox then yeah…. that would have been a nightmare similar to what Nintendo have done.
It just occured to me that Ninendo used a similar naming convention when it went from the NES to the SNES. I guess it mattered less back then, and people were’t used to the precident of having different names for each generation (SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii….. WiiU).
Xbox One would be an equally confusing name, as would SNES have been, except both of those consoles had enough explanation, marketing, and exposure to make sure the public knew the difference.
I agree, there wasn’t any need for Microsoft to call it the Xbox One outside of marketing, I think it should have been called the Xbox Home instead to reflect on it’s direction. And I have no idea where the U in Wii U came from. Perhaps the same bin where the Z in Dragonball Z came from. The only issue Sony has is with associative typing, since we’ve all become so used to typing in PS3, but that fades over time.
