Crytek, custodian of the TimeSplitters franchise since the dissolution of its original studio, will support a fan-made “greatest-hits” style remake of the series that was announced earlier this week. Crytek’s blessing means the game will release on PlayStation 4 in addition to PC.

TimeSplitters Rewind will be made absolutely free to everyone, as a condition of the licence developing team Pantheonyx has to use the series’ name and features. “TimeSplitters Rewind is a fantastic initiative that Crytek continues to support,” Nick Button-Brown, the general manager of games for Crytek, told Eurogamer. “We are happy to see the excitement and we hope it will be a great game.”

Crytek’s say-so was necessary for the game to release on PS4, where the game will enjoy classic splitscreen multiplayer (the PC version won’t feature this.) TimeSplitters Rewind also will support cross platform play between PS4 and PC; Eurogamer reports Xbox One’s discomfort with cross-platform play is the reason the game isn’t deploying for that system.

A release date hasn’t yet been given; you can see some pre-alpha gameplay in that video above. TimeSplitters Rewind will, eventually, offer all the maps, weapons and characters from the three existing TimeSplitters games.

  • Free? Released as a work in progress, with regular content updates to follow, and the first (that I know of) cross-platform play with PC? Sounds like Sony (and Crytek, obviously) is being awfully indie-friendly, to me. I suspect Sony said yes to cross-platform first, and gambled that Microsoft wouldn’t agree to PSN and Xbox Live being friends for this one, free, indie project, targeted at what’s now a very niche audience.
I’m in that niche and I hope this works out. I seriously do. With mouse support for PS4, please, because otherwise we’ll get absolutely trounced.

    • Sony have never opposed cross platform play as far as I’m aware. They’ve already had it on PS3 with Portal 2 and (I think?) Unreal Tournament?

      • You’re right, Portal 2 on PS3 even came with a Steam download code for PC. Unreal Tournament supported PC mods and featured mouse support, but no cross-play.
I’d forgotten about Portal 2. Good call.

  • I’ll be getting this on PC absaloutley stupid that it’s not on Xbox One barely anyone on PS4 will appreciate this masterpiece of a game in all fairness if it’s not CoD Sony owners don’t appreciate FPS as much as Jrpgs etc
Thank god for PC and Xbox 360 controllers

    • What are you talking about?

TimeSplitters was a PS2 exclusive (launch title too IIRC), if anything people with PS4s are likely to be long-time PlayStation users who remember the game fondly and will be greatly interested in this.

“Sony owners don’t appreciate FPS” – what a laughable statement to make. The Killzone series has sold bucketloads!
